By REO
Defining a genre isn't easy, especially when it comes to rock 'n' roll. The genre's sound varies wildly, even when looking at a single decade of rock. That said, there is one figure that defines rock better than any convoluted explanation can: JOAN JETT.
Jett is rock personified, both in her story and her music. And though she may not be a household name in the same vein as Prince or Michael Jackson, everyone knows Jett. Long before I had ever heard of JOAN JETT, I was listening to JOAN JETT. Long before I had even begun to enjoy rock as a genre, I was listening to Jett's rock - from the riot-grrrl-sparking "Cherry Bomb" to the pop-rock-pinpointing "I Love Rock N' Roll."
Jett consistently set the tone for a genre that couldn't hold a note. I love chaotic playlists, but if you made a playlist of all rock 'n' roll music, it would be garbage. You'd be jumping straight from Bob Dylan to Olivia Rodrigo to Beastie Boys. It's torture.
Rock cannot be labeled, but that hasn't stopped people from trying. Lester Bangs, one of rock's most famous critics, said in an interview with Perfect Sound Forever, "Rock 'n' roll is like an attitude, it's not a musical form of a strict sort. It's a way of doing things, of approaching things. Like anything can be rock 'n' roll."
Anything can be rock 'n' roll, but Jett is rock 'n' roll.
From a young age, rock pulled Jett in, and nothing was going to stop her from strumming - least of all a man. She told other women in rock to follow that same rule, according to an interview by Far Out Magazine. [more] JOAN JETT is Back to talk Orioles and Spring Training from: 98online.com

JOAN JETT is one of the many female musicians featured in an upcoming Rock & Roll Hall of Fame exhibit titled Revolutionary Women in Music: Left of Center.
In addition to Jett, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with her band The BLACKHEARTS in 2015, the exhibit will showcase artifacts and items related to such artists as Meg White, Natalie Merchant, Siouxsie Sioux, Liz Phair, Beyonce, Pink, Queen Latifah, Ani DeFranco, Sleater-Kinney, Christina Aguilera and Suzanne Vega.
"As the saying goes, well-behaved women rarely make history - and revolutionary women have often used music and lyrics to take action, convey truth, and call for change," says Shelby Morrison, the Rock Hall's VP of curatorial operations. "For generations, women have fought against socially constructed gender norms to obtain equal social, political, and economic freedoms, and this exhibit, which has been decades in the making, will tell this story in a way that has never been done before."
Revolutionary Women in Music: Left of Center will open March 8 at the Rock Hall's Cleveland museum. On March 7, the Rock Hall will introduce the exhibit with an event featuring 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go's, Garbage‘s Shirley Manson and Lisa Loeb.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS to Perform on Women's Day at The Fair from: nysfair.ny.gov/
By minnesotayachtclubfestival
Rock legend JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will rock Suburban Park at the Great New York State Fair on Wednesday, August 28 at 8 p.m. This is the Fair's second heart-related concert announcement this week highlighting Valentine's Day.
JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS formed in 1979. When mainstream radio didn't play their signature anthem, "I Love Rock ‘n' Roll," fans rallied to request it. The iconic hit spent seven weeks at #1. Over the next 40+ years, the band went on to amass nine Top 40 singles, including "Bad Reputation," "I Hate Myself for Loving You," and "Crimson and Clover." They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
This will be JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS' fifth time playing to fans at The Fair since 2006. They most recently performed on Labor Day in 2021, and also appeared at the Fair in 2006, 2008, and 2014. This summer's performance will close out Women's Day at The Fair â€" fitting for a frontwoman who broke down barriers in the mid-1970s to prove women could make it in the world of rock music. JOAN JETT was rejected by 23 labels before forming her own independent record label, BLACKHEART RECORDS. Still going strong today, the entertainment company continues to champion emerging bands and produces music, film, and television.
"JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS are a force! With a career that's encompassed music, TV, film, and even Broadway, Joan is an inspiration to generations of women, as well as anyone who has struggled to carve their own path," said Fair Director Sean Hennessey. "We've been fortunate enough to have this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band play at The Fair a few times over the years. It's incredible when artists of this magnitude want to come back to The Fair and continue to connect with fans."
The Fair starts Wednesday, August 21, and runs through Labor Day, Monday, September 2. All concerts are included in the price of admission, which will go on sale later this summer. The Great New York State Fair is the most affordable state fair in the country.
