How JOAN JETT taught herself the guitar from: faroutmagazine.co.uk
By Thomas Leatham
As an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it would be difficult to argue that JOAN JETT isn't something of a rock icon. She is perhaps best known as the lead singer of JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, although she found earlier fame with the RUNAWAYS and their single ‘Cherry Bomb'.
Several of the best guitarists of all time are self-taught, and while Jett may not be necessarily considered part of that exclusive group, she is indeed self-taught. She once admitted, "I did try to take lessons, but being an exuberant 13-year-old, I figured you could learn everything in one day. I went to the guitar teacher and said, ‘Teach me how to play rock'n'roll.' He looked at me like I had three heads."
Jett quit learning with her guitar teacher after just one lesson, and taught herself barre chords with a ‘how to play guitar book'. She added, "Then I sat in my bedroom and listened to records by Free, Deep Purple, T Rex and Black Sabbath because they had big fat barre chords and were slow and easy to play; I learned by ear. Playing with my records didn't seem difficult or like music homework, it was more like fun."
The first guitar that Jett played was a Silvertone electric that her parents bought for her one Christmas aged 13. A natural left-hander, the guitar was meant for right-handed players, so Jett tried to flip the guitar over as Jimi Hendrix had once done. However, it felt more natural for Jett to have her left hand on the frets (as a right-handed player would do) "because I needed to have more dexterity with that hand while my right hand would only be strumming."
Jett is admittedly a guitarist not too interested in complex techniques. As a songwriter, rather than a lead guitarist, she is more interested in the chords and the rhythm of the music, or as she puts it herself, "just pure music, not really thinking about technique too much. I'm not into difficult fingerings and style, I just like the feel of the guitar."
The Silvertone guitar would lay the blueprint for Jett's overall feel of learning the guitar. The expense was not necessarily as important as the technique. This much is true, you can put an amateur guitarist on a USA Custom Stratocaster, and they wouldn't sound 10 per cent as good as a professional on a plastic guitar from Woolworths.
Jett also gave advice to young female musicians in her own mould. She said, "don't listen to what people tell you. You may run into people asking you what you're doing, saying that girls don't play guitar. You'd think we'd be way past that now, but that's not the case. It's easy for men to throw those snide comments at girls to make them question what they're doing, and use it as a way to put girls in their place. But just screw all that and keep at it."
HOW JOAN JETT RESCUED A ROCK STANDARD FROM OBSCURITY; PROFESSOR OF ROCK INVESTIGATES from: bravewords.com
By bravewords
Professor Of Rock has released the new video below, along with the following message:
"Coming up, the evolution of a universal rock standard that was rescued from obscurity by a 17-year old future icon, who happened to see a live performance of the song while watching TV in a hotel room in London. JOAN JETT was touring with The RUNAWAYS when she saw the Arrows perform 'I Love Rock 'N Roll' on TV. Joan made a pact to cover the song no matter what. She knew it would be a #1 hit. It took 6 years after her band rejected it, and it was released as a B-side not once but 2 times. When she finally covered it as JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, including Ricky Byrd on guitar, it was a #1 smash, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks. The story of perseverance and destiny is NEXT on Professor Of Rock."

Elvis Presley's suede coat from the Seventies, James Brown's red, black, and gold lame suit, and one of Joni Mitchell's guitars are all coming to the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville as part of new partnership with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Set to open Wednesday, Nov. 2, "Rock Hall at the Ryman" showcases memorabilia from Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members who have played the historic Nashville venue. Along with Presley's full-length coat (he bombed on the Grand Ole Opry's stage in 1954), the exhibit includes the red bra halter top worn by JOAN JETT on the 2006 Warped Tour, a Shure microphone used (and most likely swung) by the Who's Roger Daltrey, and the costume Taylor Hawkins wore to induct Rush into the Rock Hall in 2013. Hawkins and the Foo Fighters delivered a you-had-to-be-there performance at the Ryman on Halloween 2014, featuring all the members in King Diamond face paint and a special appearance by Tony Joe White.
The "Rock Hall at the Ryman" exhibit also features artifacts from the Byrds, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and Eric Clapton. In May of this year, the Ryman Auditorium became only the 12th location in the U.S. to be designated a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame landmark.
Along with being the onetime home of the Grand Ole Opry and the stage for Johnny Cash's variety show, the Ryman Auditorium has been the setting for a number of monumental live albums, including LPs by Levon Helm, Neil Young, and Emmylou Harris. Billie Eilish, JOAN JETT, Noah Cyrus, and More Sign Letter to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in New York City from: americansongwriter.com
By TINA BENITEZ-EVES
JOAN JETT, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, Kesha, Noah Cyrus, and Kaley Cuoco are several artists among a growing list of celebrities who have signed an open letter to the New York City Council banning the use of horse-drawn carriages in New York City. The move comes nearly two months after a video of a carriage horse named Ryder collapsed in the middle of a busy Midtown Manhattan street on Aug. 10, 2022.
"The now-viral video of Ryder on a New York City street is heartbreaking, infuriating, and disturbing," read the letter produced by Animal Legal Defense Fund, an animal rights advocacy organization. "Ryder, an elderly, emaciated horse, collapsed on Ninth Avenue [and 45th Street] while pulling a carriage. The world bore witness as the carriage driver tried to force Ryder to his feet, while he could barely lift his head. The video is hard to watch for good reason-this is not the way animals should be treated."
In the video of Ryder's collapse, his driver can be seen yelling and hitting the horse and attempting to pull it up as it lay on the ground. "Upon arrival, patrol officers observed a carriage horse lying in the middle of the roadway in distress," said the the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in a statement responding to the horse collapse on Aug. 10. The NYPD hosed down the horse and brought him to a nearby stable for veterinary care following the incident.
After examination of the horse, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) responded to criticism of the driver's actions on Twitter and revealed more details behind the cause of the horse's collapse. "The diagnosis of the equine veterinarian who examined Ryder is that he has EPM-a neurological disease caused by possum droppings," wrote the TWU. "Please do not jump to conclusions before knowing the facts or talking to the carriage drivers' union."
Joaquin Phoenix, Christopher Walken, Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, Christian Serratos, Sadie Sink, Hilary Swank, Justin Theroux, Marisa Tomei, Maggie Baird, Edie Falco, Riley Keough, designer Christian Siriano, comedians and actors Whitney Cummings, Sarah Silverman, and Ricky Gervais, and more have also signed the Animal Legal Defense Fund letter.
The Animal Legal Defense letter continued, "Ryder is an individual, but his situation is not unique. Media stories, smartphones, and police reports have documented traumatized horses running through traffic and other carriage-related incidents too numerous to count, spanning decades. Tragic outcomes for horses haunt New York City's history, as well as other cities across the country. Horses, carriage passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and others are put at risk by this cruel and reckless industry. We say: No more."
Prior to the collapse of Ryder, City Councilman Robert Holden (D-Queens) recently introduced legislation - Intro 573 prohibiting the issuance of new licenses and the replacement of existing carriages with electric options.
"The electric carriages alternative provides a safe and responsible option for rides within Central Park and certain areas of Manhattan," read the release on the proposed legislation, which has been filed but yet to be passed.
"I appreciate all of the concerned advocates, celebrities and non-celebrities alike, who are speaking up in favor of my bill to transition to clean, humane, horseless carriages and give carriage drivers better-paying jobs," said Councilman Holden in a statement. "These abused horses can't speak for themselves, so we are their voice. New York City has always been at the forefront of innovation and culture, but we are lagging behind when it comes to these poor horses. It's time for us to be a model for other cities to follow. Intro 573 will be passed, with the help of animal lovers around the world."
Ryder is now retired to a Clover Hill Farm more than 70 miles north of New York City in Wallkill New York.
