Watch the Trailer for Upcoming JOAN JETT Documentary Bad Reputation
from: spin.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable After premiering at Sundance earlier this year, the JOAN JETT documentary Bad Reputation will finally hit theaters, on-demand, iTunes, and Amazon on September 28. The film, directed by prolific music video director Kevin Kerslake, charts the Jett's journey through rock history, including the founding of her band the RUNAWAYS in the '70s, her evolution as a solo artist, and the launch of BLACKHEART RECORDS. It shares a title with Jett's 1981 hit, which found a new audience when it was used as the theme music to the 1999 Judd Apatow cult comedy series Freaks and Geeks.

The trailer begins with Jett telling a story about a guy she approached for guitar lessons as a child, who told her that "girls don't play rock and roll." It ends with the rocker, now decades into a staggering career, proclaiming in her signature gravelly drawl, "Tell me I can't do somethingâ€"you know I'm gonna be doing it." That tells you all you need to know about all the footage in between.

‘Bad Reputation' Trailer: JOAN JETT Will Run Away With Your Rock ‘n Roll Heart in Sundance Documentary
from: indiewire.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable JOAN JETT shredded her way through rock 'n roll's glass ceiling beginning in the 1970s â€" and has the scars to prove it. As much as we may love Kristen Stewart's brooding take on JOAN JETT from 2010's eponymous The RUNAWAYS biopic, nothing compares to the real deal. The authorized documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and charts Jett's rise to rock 'n roll royalty, including the rampant sexism she and her band experienced. In addition to interviews with Jett and her frequent producer and songwriter KENNY LAGUNA, "Bad Reputation" also features an eclectic mix of her admirers, such as Billie Joe Armstrong, Miley Cyrus, Debbie Harry, Nikki Haley, Iggy Pop, Kristen Stewart, and Pete Townshend.

Directed by Kevin Kerslake ("As I Am: The Life and Times of DJ AM") and written by Joel Marcus, the film promises a wealth of archival footage and a wild jaunt through the blossoming '70s punk scene. As Magnolia's official synopsis reads: "The theme is clear: even though people tried to define Jett and keep her stuck to one hit, she never compromised. She will kick your ass, and you'll love her all the more for it."

FILM: JOAN JETT: BAD REPUTATION - Wednesday, September 26, 2018

It Came From Schenectady presentsBAD REPUTATION

ICFS is thrilled to have been selected to present an advance screening of this new JOAN JETT documentary. The film opens nationwide two days later, but Jett recorded a solo performance that will only be available to be seen at advance screenings of the rock doc. Jett and her team currently expect to also be able to offer ICFS several special items to be given away at our screening, possibly -- they suggest -- including signed records.

So much more than "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," Jett put in the hard work long before fame, ripping it up onstage as the backbone of hard-rock legends The RUNAWAYS, where she influenced many -- both her cohort of punk rockers and generations of younger bands -- with her no-bullshit style.

"Bad Reputation gives you a wild ride as Jett and her close friends tell you how it really was in the burgeoning '70s punk scene, and their interviews are laced with amazing archival footage. The theme is clear: even though people tried to define Jett and keep her stuck to one hit, she never compromised. She will kick your ass, and you'll love her all the more for it." -- Sundance

Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, and Pete Townshend are among the many who give tribute to Jett in this fantastic doc. Not Rated. 95 minutes.

UPAC Brings Classic Rock Back to Kingston This August
from: chronogram.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Call it dad rock. Call it mom rock. Call it whatever you will: The big bag also known also as classic rock is made up of the myriad styles of music that crossed over to rule both the AM and FM charts in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. It doesn't fill arenas anymoreâ€"not much does these days, besides perhaps the sports franchises the cavernous domes were originally built forâ€"but it does fill the small halls. Which, if you're a veteran artist who still loves to play (and perhaps has no plan B), is good enough. And if the people still love you for it, well, then, what the heck? With all that in mind, the Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC) has three such vanguard acts lined up for next month: JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, Air Supply, and Kansas. So crank the car radio and put the top down as we roll on down the road to break 'em down below...

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS (August 4 at 8pm) blew up out of the punk landscape and into the pop and hard rock charts in the early 1980sâ€"although by then Jett herself had already logged several years on the scene, starting with all-female legends the RUNAWAYS when she was 15. A Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she formed the BLACKHEARTS in 1979 and went on to make eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics "Bad Reputation," "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "I Hate Myself for Loving You," and "Crimson and Clover." Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones will open the show at UPAC. Tickets are $75 to $95.

Air Supply (August 10 at 8pm) are Australia's sultans of soft rock, scoring three Top 10 singles in the US in 1980 and 1981 via Lost in Love, their fifth album: "Lost in Love," "All Out of Love," and "Every Woman in the World." Formed in 1975 around the duo of singer-songwriter and guitarist Graham Russell and singer Russell Hitchcock, the millions-selling group parlayed its smooth, archetypal "yacht rock" sound into still more staples of the doctor's-office-waiting room and office-building-elevator airwaves, among them: "The One That You Love," "Sweet Dreams," and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All." Tickets are $49-$84.

Kansas (August 18 at 8pm) was founded in the state for which the band is named in 1970 and were one of the groups who defined the arena rock of the day. The band's sound fused the influences of British prog, hard rock boogie, and pop hooks and hammered it into the classic rock mainstay hits "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry on Wayward Son." Among Kansas's eight gold albums, three sextuple-platinum albums, and lone platinum live album are Kansas (1974), Masque (1975), Leftoverture (1976), Point of Know Return (1977), and Two for the Show (1978). Tickets are $44-$104.

Review: Styx tops a night of Classic Rock perfection at DTE
from: themorningsun.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP -- Sweet, sweet sounds filled the air as a crowd of nearly 12,000 celebrated a perfect night for Classic Rock on Friday, July 6, at the DTE Energy Music Theatre on Friday, July 6.

Styx, JOAN JETT and Tesla played plenty of fan favorites and the seasoned tour veterans lit up the night for fans enjoying a break from the recent oppressive heat wave to play their best air guitar and sing along with the grand illusion in their own minds.

A hard rocking eight-song set by Tesla set the tone for the night and wannabe rockers began to populate the lawn with beers clutched in one hand while smoking and fist-pumping along to "Love Song," "Signs" and "Modern Day Cowboy." The crowd was fired up and ready when JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS hit the stage and the familiar notes of "Bad Reputation" rang through the air.

Jett and her black-clad four-member band delivered a rocking 16-song, hour-long retrospective of hits -- including "Cherry Bomb" and "You Drive Me Wild" from her days with the RUNAWAYS and the Bruce Springsteen-penned "Light Of Day," during which clips of the 1987 film, which starred Jett and Michael J. Fox, played on the video screen behind the stage. It was a guitar-saturated clinic and testimony to women who rock as Jett closed things out with "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Crimson & Clover," "I Hate Myself For Loving You" and Sly & the Family Stone's "Everyday People," which had the crowd swaying and singing along.

Jett's stripped-down style was a dramatic contrast to Styx's stage production. The quintet is almost constantly touring, made obvious by the precision with which the members moved around the dual staircases flanking the stage and riser above drummer Todd Sucherman. Album cover art projected onto the video screen coincided with each song as Tommy Shaw and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan traded lead vocal duties on classics such as "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)," "Lady" and "The Grand Illusion." James "J.Y." Young took his lead vocal turn on "Miss America" and introduced "Light Up" by encouraging the crowd to "find a less damaging way" to celebrate the night than the 70s heyday of "damaging my organs."

STYX, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, Tesla
Blue Hills Bank Pavilion, Boston USA
from: music-news.com

Classic rock band package tours are becoming an essential part of the summer concert experience. With the rise in ticket prices, seeing two or three bands for one price is pretty hard to resist. One of the creams of the crop this year is the co-headlining bill of STYX and JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, with Tesla manning the opening slot, which played the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion in Boston, Massachusetts on June 27, 2018.

Tesla opened the night with an eight song set, which saw singer Jeff Keith in great voice on "Love Song," "Modern Day Cowboy," and a cover of Ph.Ds "Little Suzi" (Ph.D was actually an early 80's new wave/pop synth band). Most impressive about Tesla is that they are still sporting four out of their five original band members; Keith, Frank Hannon (guitar), Brian Wheat (bass), and Troy Luccketta (drums), while second guitarist, Dave Rude, has held membership in the band since 2006. Their most famous song, "Signs" (originally done by The Five Man Electrical Band in 1971), still resonates well as Keiths delivery evokes the passion of the songs anti-authority message.

Jett ignited the stage immediately with "Bad Reputation" (which is getting a new life in 2018, as former UFC fighter, and current professional wrestler, Rhonda Rousey, uses the song as the theme music for her entrance in the WWE) and "Cherry Bomb, the first of only two songs by The RUNAWAYS performed this night. She then spurred major crowd involvement with, "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)."

Not one to rely solely on her back catalog, Jett tossed out a new tune, "Fresh Start," which is featured in the forthcoming documentary on her, "Bad Reputation" (the film is set for release in September 2018, but premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year). The documentary was produced by Carianne Brinkman, who is the daughter of Jetts manager and keyboardist, KENNY LAGUNA. Laguna spoke mid-set last night about the struggles Jett faced starting out (during her post-RUNAWAYS solo career), as several record companies were (at that time) aloof to the idea of a woman fronting an all man band.

Jett re-visited the Runways again with, "You Drive Me Wild," (saying that this was the first song she ever penned), which led into her 1983 Top 40 hit "Fake Friends," and the Bruce Springsteen scribed, "Light of Day."

Unseen material from the epic, all-star Nirvana tribute reunion to be released...eventually
from: nme.com

That's quite a setlist...

Dave Grohl has revealed that unseen footage and material from the all-star Nirvana reunion shows from a club gig around the 2014 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame will one day be released.

Back in 2014, Lorde, St Vincent, JOAN JETT and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon fronted the band with the remaining members of Nirvana (bassist Krist Novoselic, Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear) for a special performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction before and a tiny, Brooklyn after-party show at Saint Vitus Bar saw them also joined by J Mascis and John McAuley.

Now in an interview with Rolling Stone, Grohl has said that they have plenty of unseen footage from the more intimate gig that they hope to one day release.

"When we realised that we were going to do it, I just called the people from my production company and said, 'We need to film this,' and we loaded some cameras in there and and shot it without knowing what would ever come of it," said Grohl. "But it would be a shame for that evening to be only a memory and and we've got it. And it was fucking great. It was cathartic and everybody involved, I think, understood that they were part of something like a dream.

"I remember playing and looking and seeing Carrie Brownstein in the front row in the pit singing along to every song and, you know, getting to play drums behind JOAN JETT or, god, playing 'School' or fucking 'Pennyroyal Tea' with J Mascis."

The best female-fronted punk bands Grohl added: "It really was amazing. It was something else. Someday, I'm sure everybody'll see it."

The setlist from the band's Brooklyn show was:
Smells Like Teen Spirit (with JOAN JETT)
Breed (with JOAN JETT)
In Bloom (with JOAN JETT)
Territorial Pissings (with JOAN JETT)
All Apologies (with JOAN JETT)
Drain You (with J Mascis)
Pennyroyal Tea (with J Mascis)
School (with J Mascis)
Lithium (with St. Vincent)
About a Girl (with St. Vincent)
Heart-Shaped Box (with St. Vincent)
Serve the Servants (with John McAuley)
Milk It (with John McAuley)
Very Ape (with John McAuley)
Scentless Apprentice (with John McAuley)
tourette's (with John McAuley)
Aneurysm (with Kim Gordon)
Negative Creep (with Kim Gordon)
Moist Vagina (with Kim Gordon)

Meanwhile, a recent interview also saw Dave Grohl admit that he "still can't listen to Nirvana" since Cobain's passing.

Review: JOAN JETT -- The Queen of Rock returns home to Jones Beach
from: digitaljournal.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Wantagh - On June 29, 2018, JOAN JETT and her band, The BLACKHEARTS, headlined the Northwell Health Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York.

Jett shared the stage with Tesla and Styx, and delivered a memorable hometown show on Long Island. It was great to hear her rock classic "Bad Reputation," where the fans sang along every word. They delivered soaring rendition of the spitfire "Cherry Bomb," and "Do You Wanna Touch Me," with its infectious "oh yeah" hooks, where everybody was taking deep breaths.

The rock goddess showcased attitude and growl in "Victim of Circumstance." In the first half of their set, they performed this journalist's personal favorite song "Soulmates to Strangers," which is found on her Unvarnished album. That was quite the pleasant surprise.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer took the fans and listeners on a trip down memory lane to the late '70s, with "You Drive Me Wild," which was the first song that she wrote as part of The RUNAWAYS. The BLACKHEARTS were able to tip their hats to Bruce Springsteen with "Light of Day," and the same was true for her upbeat, rocking version of "Love Is All Around," the theme song of the The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" became the anthem for Jones Beach last night, where the rock queen took over the venue, and musically transformed it into "Joan's Beach." They closed with "Crimson & Clover," and her unapologetic signature tune "I Hate Myself for Loving You." "JOAN JETT was great. She closed the night with some favorites and made me get up and dance," said Carol Barnett, rock fan and attendee.
