JOAN JETT's documentary, Bad Reputation had me from the moment she was told girls can't play rock and roll music and she went ahead and did it anyway. The leather clad rocker has had a brilliant career, which this film celebrates. Bad Reputation is ultimately a fun and rollicking watch about a strong woman who is proud to be utterly true to herself.
This documentary is directed by veteran music video maker, Kevin Kerslake. It includes a veritable who's who of music among the talking heads. Consider: Pete Townshend, Deborah Harry, Iggy Pop, Billie Joe Armstrong, Chris Stein, Kathleen Hanna, Adam Horovitz (AKA Ad-Rock) and Miley Cyrus, not to mention actors Michael J. Fox and Kristen Stewart. They help in piecing together Jett's career as a musician, writer, actor, producer, activist and all-round bad ass.
This film is like one big party. It briefly shows Jett's beginnings when she asked her parents for an electric guitar for Christmas when she was just 13 years old. There is also the successes she had with her all-girl band, The RUNAWAYS during the seventies. When they disbanded, Jett put out an advertisement for three good men and formed The BLACKHEARTS. One of her fans was Pat Smear of LA band Germs, a group that Jett would eventually produce. Smear would later play with Nirvana and Jett would accompany the Seattle group during their rock and roll hall of fame induction, standing in for the late Kurt Cobain.
This film is not a particularly balanced one with the subject often coming across as Saint Joan. But perhaps this is because Jett seems like a genuinely awesome human being. There are scenes showing her activism and support for animal rights. She is a vegetarian and a champion of LGBTQI causes, having supported Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace during her transition. Jett was also a big champion of Kathleen Hanna's band, Bikini Kill and the riot grrrl movement. [more] JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS & Cheap Trick 09/15/2018 from: lacountyfair.com By LA County Fair
JOAN JETT is an originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hard- rocking BLACKHEARTS, with whom she has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she's had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics "Bad Reputation," "I Love Rock 'N' Roll," "I Hate Myself For Loving You," and "Crimson and Clover." Her independent record label, BLACKHEART RECORDS, was founded in 1980 after she was rejected by no less than 23 labels. Blackheart is one of the longest running indie labels and continues to give voice to new bands. Jett has acted in movies and television, including 1987's Light Of Day, and in a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Show. She has appeared on such acclaimed television shows as Oprah (the last season) and Law and Order. REVIEW â€" MAYBE STYX, JOAN JETT AND TESLA WAS YOUR MOTHER'S ROCK SHOW from: 303magazine.com By Alex Kramer
But don't let the flower mosaics around the amphitheater fool you. There was nothing soft or serene about the rock concert that ensued.
A live-action shot of my formative years unfolded before me as JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS took the stage last night at Fiddler's Green. She was every bit the OG badass she became famous for, still in head to toe black leather with a red semi-hollow slung down to her knees. Legendary.
Growing up to the likes of The RUNAWAYS, Queen and Guns n' Roses, I have little doubt my preference in music stems from 1970s to mid-1990s rock 'n' roll. What better way to pay homage to my parents' stellar tastes than seeing Tesla, Styx and JOAN JETT wail years later only a few feet away? It's repayment, in a karmic sense, for all the guitar lessons and hours spent perfecting my adolescent rocker attitude.
It wasn't the show I expected. There were no mosh pits, people sat and the whole shebang started five minutes ahead of schedule. Years on the road have made the rockers punctual. Metal is the magnum opus, bloody and raw, of rock but this was grown-up. Bras didn't fly, fans didn't claw at the stage but a good time was had nonetheless. As much of an oxymoron as it sounds, the tour brought a new era of polished rock 'n' roll -- down to the last Les Gibson.
It's the steady hand of all these rockers a generation grew up seeing. Any dirt on these bands has come and gone. They're here for the music -- and to scream "f**k" at a stadium of people. A glory days rehash, this was the show a self-proclaimed rockist would classify as "pure." Even if the rock lifestyle is unstable, these bands have taken, if not taught, the test of time. They played their hits and they played them well. They know the songs so freely they, like the rest of the crowd, sang the instrumentals in buh-duh-duhs.
The heavy metal five-piece Tesla opened. No, they have nothing to do with Elon Musk. This coil brandished electric guitars, snakeskin leather and long silky hair while lightning effects spat out the screens. Almost five years ago, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS played the first-ever show at the newly opened Hard Rock Live in Northfield.
Jett kicked off the terrific 90-minute concert with the glitter-rock inspired "TMI," and then delivered the stuttering anthem "Cherry Bomb." A grunge-y rendition of "Do You Wanna Touch Me" and a punked-up version of "Bad Reputation" followed.
Earlier today, Hard Rock Live announced that Jett and the BLACKHEARTS will return to venue on Dec. 16.
