Losing both her parents within three years of each other changed rock & roll hero JOAN JETT. Working with the BLACKHEARTS and high profile guests Dave Grohl and Laura Jane Grace from Against Me!, the guitarist tapped into an introspective mood on September's Unvarnished.
Austin Chronicle: You've said Unvarnished is the most autobiographical work you've done. Was that the goal from the start or just a natural progression? JOAN JETT: Partly, yeah. It's life happening, and for lack of a better way to put it, growing up. Going through life experiences that up until that point in my life I hadn't gone through. Being in a rock & roll band, certain showbiz-y things allow you to live in sort of an arrested adolescence, and you don't have to grow up unless something comes across the horizon and you recognize you've got to deal with it.
For me, I started having deaths occurring within my extended family, and it culminated with losing both my parents; my father in 2007 and my mother in 2010. You gotta understand, I was so close to my parents, and got along with them so well. They really supported me in wanting to follow my dreams. Asking them for an electric guitar at 13, at that time it was just unheard of. It was from outer space. The fact that they didn't flinch and bought it for me ....
They always supported me, so having that huge hole in my life is very new. Very disconcerting. You feel unsure of your footing sometimes. It's crazy. You don't know what that can do to you. I think it forced me to be a bit more responsible, and sometimes it's a little scary, but that's what I meant overall. I was dealing with heavier subjects, real life subjects.
Not that the other things aren't - whether you're talking about falling in love or falling out of love, or partying and having a good time. Those are all rock & roll themes, but I think we all grow up within rock & roll as we get older. How do you speak to that? It's just territory I've not navigated before, and I'm not so sure a lot of people have.

This weekend, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS return to Austin to headline Fan Fest, the free concert series Circuit of the Americas' puts on downtown during F1. Jett leads a pack of artists from various backgrounds, including De La Soul, Whiskey Shivers, Dawn & Hawkes, and Grupo Fantasma.
Despite a storied career spanning four decades, the reigning Queen of Rock 'n' Roll was only recently nominated--for the third time--to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Much like the music genre itself, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's female membership currently hovers around 10 percent, which underlines the reality that the rock industry is still a man's world.
But it has certainly evolved since Jett broke into the scene in the late 1970s. "What seems to have changed is the fans," Jett shared in an interview with Austin Way, the morning her nomination was announced. "The girls who aspire to be in a band believe they can do it, too. The part that hasn't really changed is the business. It will change someday, but it's a slow process."
You've performed in Austin several times over the years--we're excited to have you back. JOAN JETT: I've always had a great time in Austin--and remember, I've played in Austin since The RUNAWAYS. [Editor's note: The RUNAWAYS played at the famous Armadillo World Headquarters in 1978, one of their last shows before the band dissolved and only two years before the legendary venue closed its doors.] They were always great shows in Austin because the people were so into the music. I couldn't give you one specific memory, but I know I don't have any bad memories, which are the ones that usually stand out. If everything's great, it's just kind of a good feeling that melts into your body, but if something bad happens to you, you remember that. So it's good that it doesn't stick out in that sense.
Since you brought it up, what are some of your worst memories?
JJ: Oh boy. I'd have to go back to the late '80s, touring in certain countries and opening for a heavy metal act. The people just did not want to see a girl, so it was really difficult to stay on that stage--getting spit on, yelled at. People were throwing heavy stuff. I've had a rib broken, I've been hit in the head with things, and it's not pleasant. But luckily that hasn't happened in a long time. Today, the collective released a new video with the help and blessing of legendary badass JOAN JETT riffing off her feminist anthem "Bad Reputation" to hammer home the point that Republican victories this election day will threaten what many consider basic freedoms and rights. In 2013, there were more laws passed limiting women's reproductive rights than in the entire previous decade combined. That is sure to be accelerated if the GOP does well in next week's midterm elections.
Many women in New York City, from where I write, have access to reasonable health care, but women's rights shouldn't depend on a zip code. The most regressive, antiÂwoman, antiÂvoting, anti-equality laws are being passed on the state level. This is why the midterms are so important nationwide.

Brashly forging her way in defiance of a commercial music industry notorious for rewarding conformity and resisting change, rocker JOAN JETT has spent more than three decades breaking the rules and cutting her own path to stardom.
In addition to the ubiquitous '80s anthem "I Love Rock ‘n' Roll," she's scored a slew of hits including "I Hate Myself for Loving You," "Little Liar" and "Cherry Bomb," the breakthrough track for the RUNAWAYS, the all-girl punk group she co-founded as a teenager in the '70s. Most of those songs likely will be included in the rotation when Jett takes the stage to headline the free Formula One Fan Fest concert downtown at 10:15 p.m. Saturday.
Mixed in with the classics we can also expect a hefty helping of straight-ahead rock from her latest release "Unvarnished," her first record in seven years and an album Jett describes as her most introspective and intimate release ever.
"I went through a lot of life changes over the last decade," the 56-year-old rocker said last week. She lost both of her parents; her father died in 2007, followed by her mother in 2009. Then in 2012, Hurricane Sandy decimated the barrier island where she lives, leaving her hometown of Long Beach, N.Y., looking "like a war zone." Consequently, the subject matter on the album goes deeper than standard rock ‘n' roll fare,"falling in love or falling out of love or having a broken heart or wanting to go get laid."
"I could go out and party/ But nothing kills my pain/ So helpless and there's no one I can blame," she sings on "Hard to Grow Up," the most poignant track on the new album, a song that finds Jett addressing her parents' deaths and considering her own mortality.
"I know we all lose our parents, but I guess I hadn't really contemplated the effect it was going to have on me, and it really knocked me for a loop," she said. She found herself "deep bone sad."
"It's really all to them that I even play guitar because I asked them for a guitar for Christmas when I was 13, an electric guitar, and they got it for me," she said. At the time, hard rock was uncharted territory for female artists, but Jett's parents supported her pioneering forays into rebellious metal and punk with the RUNAWAYS and driving rock with the BLACKHEARTS. They were incredibly proud, Jett said, and not being able to share with them her recent accolades, including a 2015 nomination to the Rock ‘n' Roll Hall of Fame, has been heartbreaking.
The nomination recognizes the impact of Jett's career on the music industry. In 1980, facing rejection from record labels and determined to make music on her own terms, Jett and recording partner KENNY LAGUNA formed BLACKHEART RECORDS to release her solo debut. Years before digital home publishing tools existed, she toured the country selling albums out of the trunk of her car. On Thursday night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, JOAN JETT was the subject of one pretty rocking tribute concert. Little Kids Rock -- an organization dedicated to maintaing music education programs in disadvantaged public schools -- had their annual fundraiser, and the theme of the night was Jett's songbook. (Read our review of the show, and see photos, here).
A cross-generational, multi-genre lineup got together to perform songs either written, or made famous, by Jett: the bill included Cheap Trick, Gary U.S. Bonds, Brody Dalle, Jesse Malin, Kathleen Hanna with Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys, Darlene Love, Mike Ness of Social Distortion, Tommy James, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and Alice Cooper. Most of them played while Jett watched, although she joined Tommy James (for the duo's first ever performance of "Crimson and Clover"), Armstrong and Cooper.
On Friday afternoon, she called to talk to Radio.com about the process of being paid tribute to, her new acting role and her next album.
Radio.com: So, what was going through your mind as you were seeing all of these artists perform your songs? JOAN JETT: It was surreal, I had to keep pinching myself. I couldn't believe those people were there for me. Some of these artists who I grew up with, or who are peers of mine. They were all there: they were all doing my music. It was crazy! It's hard to put into its proper context. I haven't quite found the right words to describe it, if there are any words to describe it. The word "surreal" doesn't really cut it, now that I've heard myself say it a bunch of times. It was beautiful, I felt the love in the room. It was great.
Earlier this year, you were honored at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards [she was the first woman to win the "Golden God" award]. You're accepted and loved in metal, in punk, in Steven Van Zandt's Underground Garage rock scene, and by straight up classic rock fans. But all of those crowds don't always mix, it must feel cool that you can roll with all of those crowds.
It's very gratifying, because I am part of all of those things. Some songs are more punk, some songs are more metal. To me, it's all rock and roll.
Last night during your speech, you said you learned music in school, but you didn't learn rock and roll.
At my school, we had band class, and I played clarinet for a few semesters. I couldn't play clarinet today to save my life! And I don't know how to read music. I think what I learned there was that I love to play music, but maybe the clarinet just wasn't my instrument. It took me a little bit longer to latch onto the guitar. I learned so much about Little Kids Rock, it's an incredible organization. When the pioneering all-female hard rock band the RUNAWAYS broke up in early 1979, no one took the prospects of a 20-year-old JOAN JETT's solo career seriously.
To state the obvious, the industry underestimated her. Thirty-five years and numerous top 40 Hot 100 hits later, Jett is credited as one of the most influential female rockers of all time and is once again up for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
On Thursday night at Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom, Jett was honored as Rocker of the Year at the annual Little Kids Rock charity benefit, which ended up raising $1.5 million to provide free music education (and instruments) to more than 135,000 low-income public school children.
Although it was a desire to give the gift of musical expression to disadvantaged kids that brought the crowd together, it was Jett's music that ruled the night (although the pre-teens who blazed through an impeccable cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" pre-show deserve special mention).
Jett's mentors, peers and followers were in attendance at the event to cover her songs and pay homage to her career. Billie Joe Armstrong, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Kathleen Hanna & Ad-Rock, Darlene Love, Social Distortion's Mike Ness, Tommy James, Steven van Zandt (one of the organization's key supporters) and others performed her songs.
"The people who came out tonight were unbelievable," Jett tells Billboard, saying it was "surreal" to see artists she grew up loving singing her songs. Alice Cooper, JOAN JETT, Billie Joe Armstrong, Steven Van Zandt, and Cheap Trick were just a few of the legendary musicians who took the stage at the 6th Annual Little Kids Rock Benefit honoring punk icon JOAN JETT as "Rocker of the Year" and E Street Band member, Jake Clemons as "Big Man of the Year."
As fashion designer Betsey Johnson said, it was "everything rock and roll for the kids," at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, Thursday October 23.
The event raised money for Little Kids Rock, a non-profit organization that aims to establish lasting music programs in public schools across the nation by training school teachers, donating instruments, and providing necessary course resources for students.
The funds raised could buy everything needed to set up a "School of Rock"-style band, Teddy Reiser, Curriculum Design Specialist said before the show, referencing the music-focused comedy starring Jack Black.

"I'm just so excited to see all the instruments the kids are going to get, and seeing everybody so dedicated to the cause. People who are in this room tonight are really just people who care about the children," Reiser added.
Some of the students from the Little Kids Rock program gave free music lessons to guests, including 14-year-old Marcos Vasquez from Franklin L. Williams Middle School in Jersey City, New Jersey, who has been playing guitar for three years.
"Since Little Kids Rock, I've been getting better and better," said Vasquez, who took the stage for multiple performances later in the evening.
The benefit also featured a live and silent auction which included unique donated items, such as various autographed guitars, a dinner with Maureen and Steven Van Zandt, Royal Caribbean cruises, limited edition Citizen watches, and a chance to play onstage with all the evening's performers at the end of the show.

When JOAN JETT started out playing grimy L.A. clubs with the RUNAWAYS in 1975, she probably never imagined she'd play to a crowd like the one that convened Thursday night at Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom. "Tommy James wrote one of my biggest hits," JOAN JETT said of the man who topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1969 with "Crimson and Clover." She was speaking last night (October 23) from the stage of New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, at the 6th Annual Little Kids Rock Benefit. About a half an hour earlier, James and Jett had performed the song together for the first time ever.
"I was so nervous during rehearsal, I forgot the words!" Jett exclaimed. Happily, their duo performance turned out perfectly, with James starting the song on his own, backed by the house band (made up of members of Jett's longtime backing band, the BLACKHEARTS). One verse into the song, Jett joined him and the crowd roared.
It was all part of an event that served as a tribute concert to Jett, with artists from several generations and genres performing some of her most well-known songs (and a few rarities as well).
The show raised nearly a million and a half dollars for Little Kids Rock, an organization that helps to keep music programs in disadvantaged schools. Before the Jett tribute began, the organization held an auction that raised quite a bit of cash from the many high rollers in the audience â€" a dinner with the show's producers, Steven and Maureen Van Zandt, for example, went for $60,000, while the opportunity to perform on stage ("any instrument you want!") for the encore last night went for $20,000. The audience might have been, as John Lennon once said, the kind who rattle their jewelry to show their approval. Although in fact, most of them were on their feet throughout the night, whether bidding for some pretty awesome items (other treasures included a guitar autographed by all the members of Metallica, another one bore Slash‘s John Hancock), or to sing along with Jett classics.
Jake Clemons, a singer/songwriter who is well known as the nephew of Clarence Clemons and is part of the E Street Band's horn section, was this year's recipient of the "Big Man of the Year" award, which was named after his late uncle, and per LKR's website, "...is presented to a musician who embodies the values of generosity and service that reflect Clarence's legacy and our organization's ideals" (Clarence was an early supporter of LKR). Recent recipients include Darlene Love in 2013 and Steven Van Zandt in 2012.
The 2012 and 2013 events served as ad hoc tribute concerts to the honoree, but as Jake's discography only includes a handful of songs, the decision was made to create the "Rocker of the Year" award, with Jett certainly being a deserving recipient. Punk pioneer JOAN JETT doesn't give a spit if you lump her in with old folks. The "wild girl" in the incendiary anthem "Cherry Bomb" embraces aging while raging â€" and, at 56, relishes her gig as a rockin' role model.
On Thursday night, the snarlingly sensuous singer-guitarist, flanked by famous friends and fresh-faced acolytes, provided the three-chord thrash as she was named Rocker of the Year at the jubilant Little Kids Rock educational fundraiser. Alice Cooper presented the award. Other performers included Billie Joe Armstrong and Tommy James, who sang "Crimson and Clover" with Jett.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2015 nominee, who co-founded the seminal group the RUNAWAYS at age 16, spent decades fending off music industry males who snubbed and humiliated female rockers. While the glass ceiling is still not entirely shattered, "there are girls playing rock 'n' roll in every city I go to," Jett said in an interview with The Associated Press.
These days, Jett's ferocious philosophy is tempered: count your blessings; welcome challenges; find your passion; honor your parents; "be kind but don't take any crap."
"Aspects of me are very confident. I'm also very shy," confesses the woman who struts around the stage with flaring nostrils and arched brow, tenderized by a wink or wry smile.
Post 1980s inflation and technology have recalculated "I Love Rock and Roll's" route to the dance floor ("so put another dime in the jukebox, baby"). But Jett's take-no-prisoners pathos roars on in Generation L.K.R.

We're convinced that there's no one who loves, or understands, rock 'n roll better than JOAN JETT. After all, she founded one of the most influential all-female bands, The RUNAWAYS, when she was 15; went on to record with Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook when she was 19; started BLACKHEART RECORDS with KENNY LAGUNA at the age of 22, making her the first female to own and operate a record label; and formed JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS soon after. Oh, and her version of Arrows' "I Love Rock 'N Roll" is Number 57 on Billboard's All-Time Top 100 Songs. So yeah, even if you disregard her eight platinum and nine gold records and nine Top 40 singles, she would still be the unofficial queen of punk rock.
So after decades of rocking red leather jumpsuits, black vests, band tees, and some seriously awesome eyeliner, it only makes sense that Jett would create her own clothing line. So for Hot Topic's 25th anniversary, the "loudest store in the mall" teamed up with Jett and Tripp NYC designer Daang Goodman to create a line of eight "rock fashion basics" inspired by Jett's style, music, and, of course, attitude.
"For me, I've taken a look at my style and kind of interpreting that into where we start small and see if people like it," says Jett. "We've got a black skinny jean with pleather insets and zippers, a couple of motorcycle jackets with laceup sleevesâ€"one in black, one in redâ€"a black pleather fitted jacket with zippers. JOAN JETT, who became punk rock royalty with her song "I Love Rock & Roll," is, as former punk icons are wont to do, launching her own clothing line for Hot Topic. Jett became a style icon for thousands of young rebellious women from the 1980's on, so it makes sense that decades later, said rebellion would become branded with a clothing collection geared towards "rebellious" youngsters in suburban shopping malls (no shame, I too was one such youngster).
Jett teamed up with Hot Topic and Tripp NYC designer Daang Goodman to design the collection in time for the store's 25th anniversary. Says Jett,
"For me, I've taken a look at my style and kind of interpreting that into where we start small and see if people like it," says Jett. "We've got a black skinny jean with pleather insets and zippers, a couple of motorcycle jackets with laceup sleevesâ€"one in black, one in redâ€"a black pleather fitted jacket with zippers. MTV News caught up with the iconic musician -- best known for classics like "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and "Bad Reputation" -- at a red carpet event for The Foo Fighters' new HBO documentary series, "Sonic Highways," which premieres this week ahead of their record by the same name. In the series, Dave Grohl and Co. travel around the country, telling the stories behind eight cities' music scenes and interviewing and collaborating with musicians like Jett.

This year's Little Kids Rock Benefit concert has just added a few more artists to an already packed bill.
The event, which will pay tribute to JOAN JETT, recently announced that Cheap Trick, Mike Ness of Social Distortion and Kathleen Hanna featuring Ad-Rock as additions to their list of performers (Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Alice Cooper, Darlene Love and Glen Hansard were already on the bill).
Besides Jett, Jake Clemons will also be honored at the event. Clemons, nephew of the late E Street Band saxophone player Clarence Clemons, is a singer/songwriter who is also now part of E Street's horn section.
Ad-Rock, aka Adam Horovitz, has not performed often in the years since his bandmate Adam Yauch's passing in 2012, ending the career of their group, Beastie Boys.

The veteran rock 'n' roll icon and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2015 nominee, who first burst onto the scene as a member of '70s teen rock outfit the RUNAWAYS before skyrocketing to solo success in the '80s, released her 10th studio LP, the hard-rocking "Unvarnished," with her longtime backing band the BLACKHEARTS on her label BLACKHEART RECORDS late last year.
Featuring collaborations with the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!, "Unvarnished" is anchored by the gritty but triumphant rocker "Make it Back," an anthem of recovery following 2012's superstorm Sandy.
Jett, a resident of Long Beach in New York's Nassau County, experienced Sandy's wrath firsthand.
"It was really scary, and Long Beach was devastated along with the towns all around us, and I'm sure all up and down the shore of New Jersey as we saw on the news," Jett recalled.

Did you know that in 2013, there were more laws passed to limit women's reproductive rights than in the entire previous decade? Yup. How many for men? Zero! In fact, in the entire history of the U.S. there have been NO bills regulating men's bodies. Plain and simple: if it ain't your body, it ain't your decision. I can't think of a case where this isn't the truth for women or men.
In addition, many of these laws and sentiments have been framed as women having outrageous, uncontrollable libidos. At its most extreme, the message seems to be: If we want birth control covered by health insurance, it's because we are easy. If we are raped, we must have been drunk, or wearing something inappropriate. If we need an abortion, we should have thought of the consequences beforehand. This attitude springs from the idea that women may not have sex unless it results in a baby. Yet, it's becoming increasingly difficult in the U.S. to raise that baby if you aren't wealthy, privileged and white.
These messages are all so hard to combat because they're deeply ingrained in our culture. We have millennia of socialization to push back against. As a mother, I beat myself up for blindly slipping into stereotypical parenting roles with my husband, but I try to remind myself this is the ingrained, widely-held belief system of thousands of years. It runs a lot deeper than my and my husband's arguments over who changed the last diaper.
Here's what you need to know: The bulk of these anti-women, anti-equality laws are being passed on the state level. This is why the midterms are so important.
This year, the midterm elections are just as important as the Presidential elections. Democratic control of the Senate hangs on OUR VOTES. Ten million more women than men voted in the last election. Women have decided literally every election in our lifetimes, yet, midterm turnout is historically low. LET'S CHANGE THAT!
Many of us may have access to good health care, but our experience being a womanâ€" and our rightsâ€"shouldn't depend on our zip code. Our sisters in Texas, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Ohio, Arkansas, and so many other states don't have what we have. The most regressive, antiÂ-woman, antiÂ-equality laws are being passed on the state level. This is why the midterms are so important.
A few more facts to know, if you don't:
29 states in America currently allow a rapist to sue a women for custody and/or visitation of the child birthed from that rape.
87 percent of all U.S. Counties have no abortion provider.
35 percent of American women will have an abortion by the age of 45.
In 35 percent states, Medicaid recipients do not have abortion coverage.
In 13 states a pharmacist can legally refuse to disperse birth control, even if you have a prescription.
26 states have waiting periods for abortion; only 11 have waiting periods for guns.
17 states the government forces women to go to counseling before she can have an abortion.
In 32 states, terminally ill women are forced to carry a pregnancy to term, regardless of her wishes or her living will.

So what can we do about all this? LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD. In 2012, artist Maximilla Lucas and I spearheaded a Get Out The Vote effort that had us and our community of women singing "You Don't Own Me." This time, working with the Department of Peace, and with the help and blessing of the incredibly badass JOAN JETT, we are asking you to record and submit a video of yourself lipÂ-syncing, dancing and getting loud to "Bad Reputation."

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland-born Nine Inch Nails tops a list of 15 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2015 that also features first-time-eligible Green Day and much-loved JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS.
Also on the ballot announced by the Rock Hall Thursday morning are the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, N.W.A., Lou Reed, the Smiths, the Spinners, Sting, Stevie Ray Vaughan, War and Bill Withers.
It's fitting that Trent Reznor's futuristic industrial rock band made the ballot in its first year of eligibility, in a year when the ceremonies will be held in Public Hall in the city that gave rise to the band.
In years past, there were some bands and artists among the nominees who were considered "no-brainers.'' Nirvana and KISS in the Class of 2014 are examples. NIN, Green Day and JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS fill that role in the Class of 2015.
To be eligible for the Rock Hall, artists or bands must have released their first single or album 25 years ago, meaning that potential members of the Class of 2015 had to have released a recording of some sort in 1989 or earlier.

Two years ago, rock 'n' roll cabaret act Citizen Band's cofounder Sarah Sophie Flicker and award-winning filmmaker/artist Maximilla Lukacs enlisted hip young celebrity friends like Lena Dunham, Alexa Chung and Tennessee Thomas to lip-synch to Lesley Gore's original vocal track to her classic 1964 anthem "You Don't Own Me" in a vote-promoting online public service announcement that quickly went viral and generated tons of blog reports and exposure on mainstream media sites.
Now, as the Department of Peace (DOP), they've joined forces with another female rock icon, JOAN JETT.
"It's video time again! Join us in making something badass and impactful to help inspire people to get out and vote at the midterms in November," proclaims the DOP Facebook page.
"THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!" Lukacs says on her page. "There is a war being waged on women's rights and we need to fight back with everything we've got."

Foo Fighters have announced the special guests who will appear on their forthcoming documentary Sonic Highways as well as teasing two new tracks from the album.
Dolly Parton, Public Enemy's Chuck D, Willie Nelson, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys' Mike D, JOAN JETT, Heart, Bonnie Raitt, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielson, Gary Clark Jr and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (from New Orleans) are all set to make an appearance.
It is unconfirmed how many of the above will also feature on the album (although frankly we're still holding out for a Dolly'n'Dave duet). The trailer was unveiled in the US via HBO Go.
Consequence Of Sound reports that 'Something From Nothing' a "a toned-down jam that seems to cut away right before a big breakout" featuring Grohl rhyming "city on fire" with "the arsonist choir". The other new track, a "high-powered rocker" called 'Feast and Famine' sees "Grohl screaming out the song’s title after a hearty 'Amen!'"
Dave Grohl has described the show and album as "a love letter to the history of American music." The Sonic Highways documentary marks the band's journey across eight US cities to record eight tracks for their eighth album.
The series will start on BBC Four on Sunday 26 October. Four of the episodes will be broadast on BBC Four with a further two available on BBC iPlayer.

In early September, Cee-Lo Green was dropped from the Gretna Heritage Festival bill, where he was scheduled as the closing headliner of the event, located on the greater New Orleans' Westbank. Festival organizers announced that JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS would replace the rapper, a move that was lauded by some but mostly greeted with enthusiasm, since most of the acts at Gretna Fest 2014 were straight-up rock.
The official Gretna Fest statement regarding the lineup change was that Green's recent behavior did not reflect the festival's values and family-friendly atmosphere. But Jett, the Queen of Rock and a true punk at heart, didn't censor herself as she opened up her Oct. 5 set with three tunes that aren't exactly for the all-ages crowd: "Bad Reputation," "Cherry Bomb" and "Do You Wanna Touch." The latter resulted in a massive crowd sing-along of the hook, "Yeah, Oh Yeah" as Jett moved her arms up and down like an orchestra conductor.
It was a gorgeous night in New Orleans, with a gentle breeze wafting over the crowd throughout the lively set, comprised of many crowd pleasers as well as a few tunes from the rocker's most recent album, 2013's Unvarnished.
"Make It Back" is a story Jett wrote after Hurricane Sandy, she told the crowd, and the sweet ballad was one of the only slow songs in the band's set, which ran just over an hour. While the rocker likely meant for the song to resonate with the Southern Louisiana crowd, it garnered less applause and appreciative whistles than fan favorites like "The French Song" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You."
Jett and her four-piece BLACKHEARTS seemed genuinely surprised at the size of the crowd and their rowdy response, and she bantered with the audience throughout the set, egging them on to sing her well-known tunes back at the band. Like "Do You Wanna Touch," "I Love Rock and Roll" also resulted in thousands of voices singing the hook in unison. It was a powerful moment.
The one disappointment of the fun show was that JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS missed a golden opportunity to end the set with "New Orleans." She did, however, forego her skin-tight black top in favor of a T-shirt that read "Orioles chick," and expressed her delight that her team was moving up. On a day when the Gretna Fest screens featured Saints football rather than music for the first few hours of revelry, the crowd certainly understood her enthusiasm. CLEVELAND, Ohio â€" The nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2015 will be revealed at some point in October. Let the debate begin.
In 2014, KISS finally went from perennial nominee to inductee. Grunge-rock pioneer Nirvana made it on its first ballot. And Hall and Oates came out of nowhere to enter Rock's hallowed ground.
So where does that leave us for next year? Throughout the next few weeks, we will look at the possible nominees for 2015. We will once again debate the validity of hip-hop, the veteran acts that could finally get in and a few first time nominees that that deserve serious consideration.
Perhaps the best way to look at potential nominees is to look at lists from previous years. Here is a breakdown of performer nominees from the last five years:

Rock is still alive and well, definitely in Bakersfield. The closing night of the Kern County Fair rocked out with JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS. The overflow crowd stood jam-packed into the two gate areas of visibility and sang along with all the "JOAN JETT Anthems."
