On The Surface For the CLC...JOAN JETT!
It was the early 80's. I was just about to turn 8 years old. There was a new channel called MTV debuting and I must have stared at that little moon man for days waiting for the first video. I remember seeing "Video Killed the Radio Star" but then I zonked out.
The second video I ever saw was JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS singing, "I Love Rock N' Roll" and I was hooked. In that instant, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, or make that who. JOAN JETT. The queen of rock. The goddess of the guitar. And she was tough. And hot. All black leather and you knew she didn't take anybodies shit.
I begged my mom to let me dye my hair. My white/blond just wasn't doing the trick. Of course she refused but she did let me get my hair cut like hers. My 8th birthday rolled around and my Uncle Tom bought me two cassette tapes. JOAN JETT and John Cougar. (I still have them both.) And my big surprise was concert tickets to see Joan live at the Sunrise Musical theatre.

Style Icon: JOAN JETT
Of all the female rock goddesses, nobody has captured that pure rock style quite like JOAN JETT. From the time she exploded onto the scene with The RUNAWAYS, the original "jailbait rockers", JOAN JETT has been a style icon with her football jerseys, leather pants, all black Chuck Taylors, and feathered black hair. JOAN JETT's look has inspired countless women from Kathleen Hanna, Kristen Stewart, and Britney Spears, who did a cover of JOAN JETT's famous hit song "I Love Rock 'N Roll." Her ageless beauty is beyond compare. Even at 50 years of age, she still tours, releases albums, and looks like she could be 30 years old. The "Original Riot Grrrl" is so hot today; Blender magazine named her one of the "hottest women of rock" twenty-one years after debuted with The RUNAWAYS.
'Music and Motorcycles' at Harley-Davidson
Can you name at least two things JOAN JETT, Billy Joel, Twisted Sister's Dee Snider and DMC of Run DMC have in common?
They've all been inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, and they're all big motorcycle fans.
A shared passion for music and motorcycles is the focus of a four-day "Music and Motorcycles" exhibit, presented by Long Island Music Hall of Fame and Lighthouse Harley-Davidson, that puts Joel's line of custom-designed Harleys and other bikes on public display.
Kristen Stewart on David Letterman, JOAN JETT, and Hollywood's new blood.
...The family is joined by three dogs (two of which are actually wolves) and a Bengal cat, Max, which Kristen calls Jella because "his little alter ego for me is this little, soulful, blues musician from the South." Stewart, meanwhile, is brushing up rock 'n' roll."
Stewart has played the guitar for eight years and is already preparing for her role as JOAN JETT in The RUNAWAYS, music-video director Floria Sigismondi's movie about the groundbreaking, all-girl teenage band in the '70. She's throwing herself into the part, even learning all of the band's songs so that she could potentially play them live in the movie. "There's an immense, massive, super fucking heavy pressure," Stewart says, of playing a badass like Jett. "You can't do this wrong. If I do this movie and see it and hate it and think that I just totally fucked her up, I'll publicly apologize to Joan." Still sitting on the floor-she has somehow managed to scoot herself into a corner of the room-she lights another cigarette. "But at the same timeÉnah, I'm not going to say that, that sounds so fucking arrogant," she cuts herself off. There's a pause before she continues. "I was gonna say, as long as you care as much as I care, you can't be ashamed of anything."
