Billy Idol and JOAN JETT Rocked Ruoff

Joan Motherfucking Jett still has it after all the water that has flowed under her bridge since she started The RUNAWAYS way back in the 70s. She kicked things off at last Saturday's Billy Idol show at Ruoff Music Center.

Joan rocked as hard, loud, and steady as she ever has and ever will. "You Drive Me Wild," and the Iconic "Cherry Bomb" were nods towards her teen years in The RUNAWAYS. She tore through the hits of her glory days, "I Love Rock & Roll," "Bad Reputation," and "I Hate Myself For Loving You." Shit, these three songs by themselves would probably be enough to sate most of the assembled crowd. But that was just a start for Jett.

Deep cuts like "Fake Friends," "Love Is Pain," and "(Make The Music Go) Boom," were fun and engaging, solid rock chunks done expertly by a tight as fuck band. Joan's exquisite taste in covers brought this show to a satisfying and thrilling whole enchi-fucking-lada. The band excelled on Tommy James' "Crimson and Clover," Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah!)," and The Replacements' "Androgynous," but Jett and her BLACKHEARTS tied this kick-ass, down and dirty set to perfection with a searing cover of Sly and The Family Stone's "Everyday People." It was a killer-diller set performed by a rock legend and her balls-out band.

From the get-go, Billy Idol led the crowd at Ruoff on a bus on a punky psychedelic trip. We weren't reading murder books and trying to stay hip. But that was probably because we were trying to figure out if that was Steve Stevens or, like, Nikki Sixx fucked Snooky really hard, and she took a shit, and that shit strapped on a guitar and joined the Billy Idol band.

Regardless, the band sounded perfect and looked the part. Billy Idol was as good as he's ever been, sneering, punching the air, and singing like the deranged twin of Iggy Pop.

Songs like "Eyes Without A Face," "Dancing With Myself," and the treat of the show, "Flesh For Fantasy," were given definitive readings. He started the set with a killer song from his newest LP, Still Dancing. Oddly called "Still Dancing." Idol pulled out three more bangers from his latest joint, "77," "Too Much Fun," and "People I Love" over the course of the evening. It's refreshing to watch a veteran rocker do new material that doesn't suck and is relevant and sits well with his classic stuff.

I still had the same gripe with this show as I did the last time Billy came through a few years ago at Clowes Hall. Steve Stevens couldn't and wouldn't shut the fuck up. In fact, all the stuff I had to say about Stevens' performance aligned perfectly with what I had to say back then. So, I copied and pasted what I wrote, rather than figuring out how to say the same fucking thing twice.
