Called the Queen of Rock and Roll, JOAN JETT's iconic tunes crank up the energy of any movie scene they're played in, from Shrek to Birds of Prey.
Described as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, JOAN JETT is one of the most iconic rock musicians of all time. She has the distinction of having played with two wildly popular bands - first, the RUNAWAYS and later, JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS - and she's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the latter group. Three of the BLACKHEARTS' albums have been certified at least gold, with one going multi-platinum.
From "I Love Rock 'n Roll," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for almost two months, to "Bad Reputation," Jett has recorded a bunch of rock classics, and some of them have been repurposed to create memorable movie moments.
10. "Time Has Come Today" In Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
After the first Neighbors saw a hard-partying fraternity moving in next door to a suburban couple with a newborn baby, the second one saw a hard-partying sorority moving into the same house.
It could've just copied all the jokes from the first one, but director Nicholas Stoller interestingly used the new premise to explore gender inequality and sexist rules on college campuses. Given the sequel's feminist message, JOAN JETT is right at home on the soundtrack.
9. "Long Live The Night" In Days Of Thunder
After making every Navy recruiter's dream, Top Gun, Tony Scott and Tom Cruise reteamed for Days of Thunder, an exhilarating drama about a racecar driver. "Long Live the Night" by JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS sits alongside Elton John's "You Gotta Love Someone" and Guns 'N' Roses' cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" on the soundtrack.
While the movie's script was criticized for its similarities to Top Gun, the action scenes, Cruise's performance, and Hans Zimmer's score were all widely praised.
8. "Bad Reputation" In The DUFF
It's appropriate that "Bad Reputation" is featured on the soundtrack of the teen comedy The DUFF, because the acronym assigned to the title character signifies her own bad reputation as the "Designated Ugly Fat Friend."
Although the movie itself received mixed reviews, Good Girls' Mae Whitman was universally praised for her lead performance as the eponymous DUFF, Bianca Piper.
7. "She's Lost You" In Less Than Zero
Bret Easton Ellis' novel Less Than Zero sees a bunch of college kids coming home for the holidays. Since it doesn't have much of a plot and it's more character-driven, it made for a great hangout movie.
JOAN JETT's "She's Lost You" plays on the soundtrack when Julian goes to a car dealership to convince his uncle to invest a few grand in a nightclub.
6. "I Hate Myself For Loving You" In Birds Of Prey
Following on from Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn and the Joker's breakup is a major plot point in Birds of Prey. Outside the search for the MacGuffin, this breakup is the movie's main conflict.
JOAN JETT's Grammy-nominated chart-topping hit "I Hate Myself for Loving You" - about being trapped in a toxic relationship - is perfectly paired with Harley's emotions following the breakup.
5. "Cherry Bomb" In Dazed And Confused
Richard Linklater's high school comedy Dazed and Confused has one of the greatest soundtracks in movie history, incorporating hits by such beloved rock artists as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, and ZZ Top. One of the rock 'n' roll classics featured during the party scene is the RUNAWAYS' "Cherry Bomb."
Surprisingly, Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused," the namesake of the movie, is one of the few rock hits that doesn't appear on the soundtrack.
4. "Bad Reputation" In Kick-Ass
Hallway fight scenes have become commonplace in superhero movies. One of the most brutal superhero hallway fights appears in the satirical comic book actioner Kick-Ass.
Hit-Girl, a 13-year-old masked vigilante played by Chlo‘ Grace Moretz, slaughters a hallway full of gun-toting mobsters set to "Bad Reputation."
3. "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" In Wayne's World 2
"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is easily the biggest hit of JOAN JETT's career. It sat at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for seven weeks and remains one of the most recognizable rock tunes after nearly 50 years.
The song appears on the soundtrack of Wayne's World 2, which had a lot to live up to after the first movie's soundtrack featured Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton, Alice Cooper, and of course, Queen.
2. "Cherry Bomb" In Guardians Of The Galaxy
James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movies have the best soundtracks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because Peter Quill's "Awesome Mix" tapes provide diegetic pop and rock hits from the '60s and '70s.
The RUNAWAYS' hit "Cherry Bomb" plays over the montage of the Guardians and the Ravagers teaming up to plan for the final battle against Ronan the Accuser.

One of the many ways that Shrek upends the tropes of fairy tales is its anachronistic soundtrack. Smash Mouth's "All Star" plays over the opening credits and Eddie Murphy covers a bunch of familiar hits as Donkey.
When Shrek confronts Lord Farquaad about the increasing population of his swamp and has to fight off all of his knights, JOAN JETT's "Bad Reputation" sets the perfect mood. |
