JOAN JETT, Air Supply: Musical extremes bond over love at the Bardavon and UPAC
from: poughkeepsiejournal.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable You would have to work pretty hard to find two bands that have less in common than JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS and Air Supply.

When I think of Jett, I think of black leather, her snarl, her growl and her roar. But I also think of a female pioneer in the music industry and someone whose songs -- "I Love Rock n' Roll" and "Crimson and Clover" among them -- stoke my teenage, primal rock instinct decades after I first heard them.

When I think of Air Supply I think of clever, tender ballads that focus on love -- "Lost in Love," "All Out of Love" and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" among them.

You can see firsthand over the next two weekends how different these bands are -- aside from their shared attraction to songs about love. And you can see how the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie hosts a diverse range of artistic offerings with wide appeal.

Jett is scheduled to perform Saturday at the Broadway Theater at Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston. Air Supply is scheduled to play UPAC on Friday, Aug. 10.

Both shows are being presented by the Bardavon and both gigs will build on the arts organization's impressive run of performances over years.

Bardavon shows that stand out for me include the two Bob Dylan concerts staged at Hutton Brickyards in Kingston in June 2017. The Bardavon and Hutton Brickyards are working together to stage more shows, so stay tuned on that.

Crooner Tom Jones played the Bardavon Gala in Poughkeepsie in May. And the David Byrne concert that the Bardavon hosted at UPAC in March was easily one of the top three performances of live music I've ever seen in my life.
David Byrne performs at UPAC in Kingston on March 10. Woodstock musician Simi Stone, a member of Byrne's band, is at left. Both shows are sure to feature hit songs.

And these concerts will let passionate Hudson Valley music fans share a room with passionate musicians whose musical legacies, across decades, continue to sustain themselves with catchy tunes.

â€" Tickets for JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS at UPAC on Saturday cost $59, $75, $89 and $99. Tickets for Air Supply at UPAC on Aug. 10 cost $49, $59 and $84. Bardavon members for both shows receive a $5 discount and preferred seating.

Also: Beyond next weekend, the Bardavon will be hosting plenty of shows in Poughkeepsie and Kingston. These include:
Kansas at UPAC on Aug. 18.
Neko Case at the Bardavon Sept. 21.
Compania Flamenca Eduardo Guerrero at the Bardavon Oct. 5.
Comedian Wanda Sykes at UPAC on Oct. 26.
Comedian Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias Nov. 25 at UPAC.
