The Top Five Uses of JOAN JETT Songs in Movies
from: tvovermind.com

low resolution image Not Enlargeable Many of JOAN JETT's hits are covers of songs she's loved by other writers. When interviewed for Rolling Stone, Jett noted that as a fan of so many classics, she said she is familiar with every detail which makes the music stand out. That's why she felt that her covers really couldn't "equal the original". But loving the songs is why she wanted to perform them, and her style has produced completely original versions. Her covers have been so completely blow-you-away renditions that they've turned up in all sorts of movies. They have been used to highlight specific scenes; sometimes taking center stage musically, or providing some cool background music.

It's interesting that in the beginning, Jett sent out songs to record labels all the time. They were rejected, so Jett started BLACKHEART RECORDS herself. The four rejected songs were Bad Reputation, Crimson and Clover, Do You Wanna Touch Me, and I Love Rock 'n' Roll. Those songs have gone on to have lives of their own in multiple movie soundtracks. For example, Crimson and Clover has been used in the soundtracks for the films Monster and High Fidelity, while Long Live the Night was used in Days of Thunder starring Tom Cruise. The Godmother of Punk and Queen of Rock 'N' Roll knew what she was doing.

Here's some stellar movie appearances of Jett's hit songs:

Bad Reputation in Shrek

This classic JOAN JETT song has appeared in many movie soundtracks. Bad News Bears, Kick-Ass and Baby Mama are a few great examples. But, really…who doesn't absolutely love Shrek? When he lets loose in this fight scene, nothing works better as musical accompaniment than these raspy vocals and hard rock.

I Love Rock 'n' Roll in Flashdance

One of the biggest hits Jett & The BLACKHEARTS have is their cover of this song. But the thing is…the covers are so fantastic that many fans don't realize that Jett didn't write it. The song is almost synonymous with Jett. There's also no denying the popularity of Flashdance. Great scene.

Cherry Bomb in Guardians of the Galaxy

Some critics have aptly called this song an anthem for young, rebellious teenage girls. It was first recorded when Jett was the guitarist for The RUNAWAYS. The all-female band emerged as rock talents, shocking the public with the promiscuous lyrics. Later, Jett would re-record the song with her band The BLACKHEARTS. The song is played in The Guardians of the Galaxy as background music: Here's the version in the movie biopic about The RUNAWAYS:

Here's a video of JOAN JETT and Cherie Currie singing Cherry Bomb live in 2001:

Light of Day in Light of Day

Michael J Fox plays Joe Rasnick, a fellow from Cleveland Ohio. His sister Patty is played by JOAN JETT. They go out tour with their band, The Barbusters, but eventually return home to care for their mom, who is dying. Fox and Jett sing Light of Day, the title song of the movie, together. What a pair! The song Light of Day was written by Bruce Springsteen. Here he and Joan sing the song together in concert:

Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love in Tank Girl

Based on the comic series Tank Girl by Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin, this 1995 science fiction comedy features a soundtrack recorded by top female rock artists. The soundtrack was eventually more popular and successful than the film, which was of the feminist cult film genre. The soundtrack features a punk style duet version with Jett and Paul Westerberg:

An adaptation of the classic song "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love" is used in a huge showstopper:

It's not a movie, but it's too good to miss. The TV hit GLEE did a fabulous cover of Do You Wanna Touch Me? that's rockin' …oh, yeah!
