2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Is All About the Love

The 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was all about sharing the love this week, with none other than Miley Cyrus expressing her innate appreciation for Runways and BLACKHEARTS front woman, JOAN JETT. The internet may have been more than a little disappointed when it was announced that Cyrus would be inducting punk rocker Jett into the Hall of Fame, but the former teeny bopper was not about to let other's opinions of her ruin an inaugural speech that gushed at the seams about the brilliance of ground breaker Jett.
Not one to shy away from a touch of controversy, Cyrus began her speech with a real attention grabber, "I'm going to start off this induction with the first time I wanted to have sex with JOAN JETT." She then began to relay the story of when she first met Jett backstage at the Oprah show, "We were in her bathroom and we were smoking and talking," Cyrus went on, "and I was getting to have this moment with someone that to me, is Superwoman." The 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony took place at the Cleveland Public Hall in April and was aired on HBO on Sunday evening, May 30th.
Jett recently recorded Different with Cyrus to benefit Cyrus' new non-profit organisation, Happy Hippie Foundation. The organisation's aims are to help raise awareness for LGBT and homeless youth as well as other vulnerable minorities. Speaking about her young collaborator, Jett said in a 2011 interview that she was grateful she did not have to put up with the media attention during her youth and showed empathy for the former Disney star, "I was thinking to myself how difficult it must be to lead your life as a teenager with the amount of paparazzi and press you're surrounded by," she said. The friendship between the two women will have been firmly cemented at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as Cyrus concluded her speech with the words, 'She made her world evolve'. Fans of Jett would likely be in full agreement with Cyrus as the rocker's acknowledgement by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is often considered to be several decades overdue.
The love at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony did not stop with Cyrus and Jett however, as Beatle Paul McCartney gave a heartfelt introduction to his former band mate Ringo Starr. Starr is the last of The Beatles to be acknowledged by the Hall of Fame, with the others receiving their accolades previously as solo artists. As he presented the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award for Musical Excellence, McCartney said of Starr, "He just is something so special. When he's playing behind you, and you see in these other bands where they're looking around at the drummer, 'is he going to speed up? is he going to slow down?' You don't have to look with Ringo".
During the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony it was clear that McCartney sees Starr as the ultimate professional, regaling the audience with tales of the time he and Lennon first heard Starr play, as well as reminiscing about Starr's beard and mature demeanor, "He had a suitÉand he would sit at the bar drinking bourbon and seven. We'd never seen anyone like this. This was like a grown up musician," he joked. McCartney also warmly paid tribute to Starr's family, describing his mother Elsie as "beautiful" and his stepfather, Harry, as "lovely." He attributed part of Starr's success to his parents who had "real big hearts" and who "loved music." In response to his heartwarming speech, Starr later teased McCartney about the stories he could tell of their time working together, as well as imparting some wisdom for those currently touring with their own bands, "If you fart," Starr said, "own up to it!"
The 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony gave Fall Out Boy the opportunity to pay tribute to their idols, Green Day, as they presented them with their award in the Early Influence category. The Illinois rock band have never shied away from telling the world what a tremendous influence Green Day have had on them and once again they enthused with delight as vocalist and guitarist Patrick Slump told the audience of his own induction into the music of Green Day, " I tried to dress like them, I followed every interview, I watched every TV performance," he said, "The more immersed into the world I got, the more I thought that this band was one of the greatest." The tribute did not stop there, as Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz went on to point out moments of punk rock greatness, including Green Day's ability to redefine the genre and their outstanding live performances. Wentz concluded his part of the speech with, "Let some Reddit feed argue the definition of punk rock. For me, I already have my answer."
Also sharing the love at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony alongside Starr, Green Day and JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS, were recipients The "5" Royales, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Lou Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble, and Bill Withers. With performances from Beck and Dave Grohl amongst others, the event has been hailed as one of the most warmhearted and star studded yet. Now in it's 30th year of celebrating the world's most talented musicians, the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony has certainly set the bar high for future inductees. |
