Music lineup, new attractions announced for Spiedie Fest

TOWN OF DICKINSON â€" It will be a mix of new and old when the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally returns to Otsiningo Park this summer for its 31st year.

The three-day festival is going back to selling buttons for weekend-long admission after switching last year to offering individual tickets for daily admission, organizers said during a Friday afternoon press conference at Otsiningo Park.

Entry to the park will be free on Friday, July 31, the festival's opening day, thanks to a sponsorship by Visions Federal Credit Union, organizers said.

Buttons, which will cost $20 each, will still be required to get into the concert area, organizer Dave Pessagno said. They will be good for admission to the festival and the concert area on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

This year's Spiedie Fest is scheduled to run July 31 to Aug. 2.

Organizers on Friday also announced JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will perform at the festival July 31, and country acts Love and Theft and Gloriana will take the stage on Aug. 2

Pessagno confirmed earlier this month that Spiedie Fest has booked pop music singers Christina Perri and Colbie Caillat for the Aug. 1 show.

Sam Lupo, president of the 2015 Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally, said this year's festival will be the best in the event's 31-year history.

"All three days will be filled with activities, many that are new," Lupo said. "The buttons are back, and ... they will be the best entertainment value not only in Broome County, but in the Southern Tier this year."

In March, a Broome County Legislature committee approved a request by Spiedie Fest organizers to allow alcohol sales at this year's festival.

Beer, wine sales at Spiedie Fest approved

A beer garden and a Taste of New York tent with around 30 food and beverage vendors will be set up in the park for the weekend, organizers said Friday.

"The event continues to evolve," Broome County Executive Debbie Preston said Friday. "We think that highlighting some of New York's local wines and beers and allowing our patrons to enjoy these beverages will bring a new dimension to the festival."

In addition to the traditional spiedie cooking contest, this year's festival will also include a spiedie eating contest. There will also be a new midway with a Ferris wheel and other rides.

Last year's event drew a total of around 75,000 people, organizers said. The daily admission tickets were sold for $15 on Friday and Saturday, and $20 on Sunday. It cost $8 a day for admission to the festival only, without concert access. Children 8 and younger were admitted free.

Buttons for this year's Spiedie Fest and Ballon Rally will be sold at local Weis locations, Lupo's, Wegmans, the Oakdale Mall office and Sidney Federal Credit Union. They will also be available for purchase online at spiediefest.com.
