Why Miley Cyrus inducting JOAN JETT into the Rock Hall makes sense

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Now we know why it took a little longer to find out who would be inducting JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 18 in Cleveland.
The announcement was both huge and polarizing. Miley Cyrus will do the honors, to some fans' excitement and others' disdain.
That being said, you have to admire the Rock Hall's willingness to think outside the box. Here are five reasons why I think Miley's involvement in this year's ceremony is a wrecking ball of awesomeness:
It's good for business
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn't just a celebration, it's a show that costs a lot of money to put on and has to make a lot of money to break even (and then some). It's no mistake that the group of nominees in recent years has featured a diverse mix of acts ranging from longtime music legends to pioneering hip-hop acts to 1990s rock icons. The goal is to draw a broad audience of music fans. Think of this year's show as an epic concert that pays homage to late legends and geniuses of yesteryear with Green Day as the headliner. In that sense, Miley Cyrus fits right in. Just like Fall Out Boy presenting Green Day, it's one of the few aspects of the ceremony that will draw a young audience, something that's essential to the Rock Hall's future.
JOAN JETT is cool with it
I haven't spoken to JOAN JETT personally, but here's what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is not going to do. The museum is not going to have someone JOAN JETT hates present her for induction. In fact, there's a good chance Jett loves what Miley stands for in refusing to care what people think. This is the singer who scored one of her biggest hits with the song "Bad Reputation."
The Rock Hall isn't as sacred as purists like to think
I don't mean this as a slight towards the Rock Hall. It's just that some music fans act like there's a divine force that tells people who to induct or involve in the ceremony. That's just not the case. In a recent Rolling Stone story on Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney basically asserts that Ringo's induction as a solo artist stems from McCartney telling those with influence that if they inducted Ringo, McCartney would show up to induct his former bandmate. I have no problem with Ringo being inducted as a solo artist, but there are other artists whose solo careers deserved recognition first (Tina Turner, Sting, Mick Jagger). Perhaps those artists don't have McCartney's backing. Sure, Miley Cyrus is a controversial pop star, but don't act like she's disgracing some religious ceremony.
It's not all about rock anymore
And people hate this fact. The truth is, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has taken its blues roots and moved into a variety of genres. Dance, pop and hip-hop acts have all made it in over the years to some people's displeasure. But that's just the way it is and, more importantly, the way it's going to be. If you really think about it - How long could the Rock Hall solely focus on the literal definition of rock? Recently, I began thinking about who would be the last rock band inducted into the museum. The White Stripes? Probably. The Black Keys? Possibly. Fall Out Boy? Maybe. How many current rock bands have a shot? The future of the Rock Hall is dependent on recognizing the evolution of music and the organization has wisely chosen to do so.
Stop with the hypocrisy
There are a lot of music fans (most of them older) that have been whining about how Miley Cyrus' inclusion puts a black eye on this year's ceremony. Get over it. These people probably have forgotten that Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, Oprah Winfrey and Cheech and Chong have all inducted artists. Going beyond that, these are probably the same people who turned a blind eye to the closing of last year's ceremony. There we were, watching JOAN JETT playing with the surviving members of Nirvana while HBO executives and other big wigs sat in the front rows belting out Kurt Cobain's defiant lyrics to "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Something tells me Cobain would have had less of a problem with Miley Cyrus showing up at a Rock Hall ceremony than having his music played at what looked more like a corporate Christmas Party. |
