JOAN JETT rocks the new Premier Center

Not only did Dana Johnson attend her first live concert ever Wednesday, she did it in style, going to the first performance at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
"It sounded pretty good," the 18-year-old from Sioux Falls said during intermission after hearing a 30-minute set from Starship, the opening act for JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS.
As a newbie to live performances, Johnson had nothing to compare the new events center to, but those who suffered through concerts at the Sioux Falls Arena were enthused about the venue's acoustics and sight lines.
"It's probably four times better on acoustics," said Greg Learing of Sioux Falls, comparing the two. "There's more room, and people are excited. We're coming back for the Jason Aldean concert."
Country star Aldean will perform to a sold-out crowd for Oct. 3's grand opening. Jett's performance was billed as a rock 'n' roll ramp-up concert," said Rick Huffman, the center's director of sales and public relations.
"We wanted to get the staff used to the space, and the public as well," Huffman said. "This gave our production staff a chance to set up the stage and lights, a run-through before Jason Aldean."
Exact attendance figures were unavailable, but Huffman said an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people attended the JOAN JETT concert.
"I thought the volume and everything was just perfect," Jim Honkomp of Sioux Falls said. "It wasn't too loud. It wasn't too high. It was fantastic."
Jane Schult also said the sound is a big improvement from the arena. Her seats for the JOAN JETT concert were on the side in Section 103. For the Aldean concert, Schult has tickets one level up, in Section 216.
"I don't think those will be bad tickets either," she said.
Some adjustment might be needed in later concerts, said Randy Wilson of Crooks. He was seated on Starship's left side, and it appeared only that side of the band was being broadcast. Auxiliary speakers might be needed if the problem persists, he said.
That, however, was a minor issue on the Sanford Center's opening night.
"I'm still glad I'm here," Wilson said. |
