Hard Rock Rocksino in Northfield Park ready to rock with JOAN JETT

It's fitting that JOAN JETT will be the musical guest at the Dec. 18 opening of the Hard Rock Rocksino in Northfield Park.
Instead of singing "I love rock 'n' roll, put another dime in the jukebox" perhaps she'll change the lyrics to slot machine, because this $268 million investment is banking on the old adage that casinos make the most money from the popular one-armed bandits.
However, at the Rocksino the slots are called video lottery terminals, and there will be plenty of them. In fact, Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park President Jon Lucas said the 200,000-square-foot gaming-and-entertainment venue boasts more than 2,200 state-of-the-art VLTs.
"So far the response has been great," Lucas said. "I really believe that people will be very pleasantly surprised for what we built here. I call it a comfortable-contemporary feel. It's not like when you walk in you feel like you have to be dressed up or it's intimidating or gaudy. I think people are going to come in and feel very comfortable."
Part of that comfort includes four dining options, with Bernie Kosar's Wood-Fired Grill steakhouse, a Hard Rock Cafe (naturally), the obligatory buffet and a bistro.
There's also the Hard Rock Live club, which is a music venue that can hold 2,600 people. That's where Jett will be rocking out on opening night. Already booked for the venue are Night Ranger (Dec. 27) and Huey Lewis and The News (Jan. 24), with more shows expected to be announced soon.
In addition, the Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park has an intimate space called The Club. The 320-seat area will be used to showcase comedians and illusion acts, as well as to host private parties.
Still, one must question whether Northeast Ohio, which has another relatively new and decidedly high-profile casino downtown, can sustain two gaming ventures.
"We've done some studies," Lucas said. "We think there's room for another property here in the state. We think there is still some Ohio money going to Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Hopefully, we can bring more of that money back into the state by giving people a different option than what is currently here."
Lucas said the area has already benefited economically from the Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park's construction with roughly 1,500 workers used at the job site. That's not to mention the more than 800 people needed to run the casino, which offers only slots and no table games. He said estimates show the Rocksino should generate more than $100 million in a variety of taxes.
The idea is even if people aren't slot players, they can still come out for dinner and entertainment.
"We have a few more amenities than the competitors," Lucas said. "Plus, we'll have over $1 million in memorabilia displayed throughout the property, led by Eddie Van Halen's motorcycle on display at the center bar."
No doubt gamblers are hoping they'll be on top of the world.
