BLACKHEARTS Beat in Brooklyn
from: sfctoday.com
by Lauren Suarez
A crowd of over 2,500 people came to watch JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS perform a free set in part of the Coney Island Summer Concert Series on August 9th. This wildly diverse crowd ranged from preteens to rocking grandparents ready to party.
The opening act was none other than Coney Island's own set of freaks; The Coney Island Sideshow. This was upon the request of JOAN JETT herself.
These performers included:
¥ The Human Blockhead (who hammers and drills nails into his nose)
¥ Insectavora (a tattooed wonder who walks barefoot on a staircase of swords)
¥ Serpintina (snake charmer)
¥ Betty Bloomers (sword swallower)
¥ The self proclaimed Worlds Strangest Strongman (who lifts an anchor using only fishhooks embedded in his eyeballs)
The audience was not expecting this freaky opening act. The host of the event, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said it well, "This is Brooklyn for you!"
The Beastie Boys, "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" blazed over the audio system to the joy of all the "Brooklynites" in the house. On the last verse of the chorus, the BLACKHEARTS graced the stage.
JOAN JETT took to the stage in a red glittery jumpsuit reminiscent of her style in her days with the all girl-band, the RUNAWAYS.
She brought the audience to their feet and kept them jumping and singing along to every one of the hits she played. Jett kicked off the set with Bad Reputation and Cherry Bomb. These songs showed off her talent and raw power including her fierce growl.
The playlist continued with more of her hits including: Do You Wanna Touch, Victim of Circumstance, I Love Playing With Fire, The French Song (which Jett referred to as being "risquŽ"), Love Is Pain, and Fake Friends.
She then played new songs including TMI, a coming of age ballad called Hard to Grow Up, Make It, along with a new upbeat punk rock song called Reality Mentality.
Jett ended the set with huge audience sing-a-long versions of I Love Rock 'n Roll, Crimson and Clover, and I Hate Myself for Loving You.
This made fans go wild and yell Jett's name for more.
Jett came back on stage to play a two song encore to the delight of the crowd. These songs were Little Liar and A.C.D.C.
Then she thanked the crowd and showed her genuine appreciation of all of her fans. All of the smiling she does throughout the set also tells you how much she truly enjoys playing.
Her high energy suggested that Jett is in the prime of her life. She sounds and looks as good as she did some three decades earlier.
She jumps around on stage whilst singing and showing off her guitar chops that earned her a spot on Rolling Stones list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Players. Jett is only one of two women on the list.
Whether she is impacting society with her lyrics, fierce guitar power chords, her feminist rock n roll style, or her support for PETA, she is proving to the world that she is a force to be reckoned with. |
