JOAN JETT making wishes come true

Put another dime in the jukebox baby, because JOAN JETT is returning to the San Diego County Fair for a performance June 19.
Jett, 53, is known for such chart-toppers as "I Love Rock 'n Roll," "Crimson and Clover" and "Bad Reputation." We spoke to the rocker from her beachfront home in Long Island, N.Y., about why she's involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, her recent nomination with her band, the BLACKHEARTS, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and what she does in her down time (you'll never guess).
Question: How did you get involved in Make-A-Wish Foundation?
Answer: I find it to be really moving; hopefully, we can inspire some of the kids that are ill. We try to honor any requests that any child might have, whether it's wanting to hang out backstage or seeing the show from a perspective they don't usually get to. If I do anything to help, that's humbling. It's about giving back and making a connection. That's what music is about for me.
Q: What kind of generations are you seeing in your audience these days?
A: I think parents are more willing to let their kids see rock 'n' roll than before. It's crazy. I see all ages, from the little kids to the 10-year-olds to the teens to the 30-year-olds to the parents, even the grandparents. If I do something like a state fair, it's even more diverse.
Q: You're pretty recognizable. What do fans say when they see you?
A: People give me peace for the most part, unless it's people I know. If they want to come up to say hi, that's fine.
Question: You look great. What do you do to stay in such shape?
A: I really don't do that much. I take two days a week and do just a half-hour of basic core work. I try to stay on top of it when I can. But it's mostly being out on the road, walking miles through the airports and carrying bags ---- it's like lifting weights. That stuff's not light, so it's hard work. Then you go do a gig. That's another workout in itself.
Q: Are you working on new music?
A:Some of the (newer) songs deal with all the changes in social media and how tied into it people are. I think it can be used for good things, but I don't use Twitter or Facebook to tell everyone what I'm doing. I don't want to go into something I'm not able to wean myself away from. Television is bad enough.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: Gardening, growing things like lettuce and oranges and blueberries. I have a raspberry bush and an almond tree. Stuff like that. There's a lot of sand around here, and I like having some greenery around. I'm getting kind of really inspired and am trying to figure it all out. It can be very windy so it's hard to grow things outside. I'm looking for things that can break the flow of wind.
Q: How did it feel for you guys to get nominated into the R&R Hall of Fame?
A: I don't really think about it. It's a great nod in the industry and what you mean to music. If I get in, we'll deal with that when it gets to that point.
