The rejection of 23 labels may be reason enough for any artist decides to give up, and turn to feng shui, to attend a supermarket or open a parripollo. But JOAN JETT, who at the forefront of the RUNAWAYS and had a few years in the environment curtiŽndose macho rock, decided to go ahead and start his own label (BLACKHEART RECORDS, which continues today), and thus become one of the faces and most recognizable female voices in rock. And while it had already achieved notoriety with his group charge of riot girrrl was the hit "I Love Rock and Roll" which led to worldwide fame and sold several million records. Today, with 53 years very well kept, Jett returns to enjoy a tour-as he did in his time with Aerosmith, The Police and Queen, and will be the special guest Foo Fighters at the two international dates Quilmes Rock, 3 and 4 April in River. But before all that, Jett meets routine interviews, Short and to the foot.
When and how did you meet Foo Fighters? I guess you knew Pat Smear for being the producer of the first album by The Germs, but spent much time with one thing and another ...
Of course, I know Pat since I was a teenager, when I produced for The Germs, and I guess the connection this way comes. But over the years, going back and forth on the road, being in the same environment, I tried to find ways to reach those musicians he admired in some way, and among them was Pat. Thus we reach a point where we agree in several concerts and thought it would be good to do something together, and that took shape when I was invited to Foo Fighters Madison Square Garden to play with them, "Bad Reputation". It was so cornered a few days later we repeat the David Letterman show. One day Dave (Grohl) told me "Do you want to go with us to South America?" And I shouted "I love to go to South America", ha.
After many years of career is your first visit to Argentina, what expectations do you have?
I do not know what to expect! I overheard that the public is very Argentine rock, say, exuberant, very demonstrative, so I hope to spend some fun days and is all good. As for the country, I really do not expect or what I find, because I'll be there in professional music-plan-or tourist, perhaps, trying to meet as many people as possible, but we are only two or three days.
How is the show they will do in the Quilmes Rock? River stage is very large, and you have to know that many had hoped you could do a show itself in a smaller place ...
Really? Good to know. Our show is basically the music and the hits, do not carry tons of production or lights or anything like that. We play the songs and try to build a good relationship with the audience, with songs from The RUNAWAYS and our, obviously. It's simple: we are a typical rock and roll band.
Argentina is known for its food and especially meat. Is it very hard to be vegetarian when you're on tour?
It is not simple, but is getting increasingly easy because there are more people that do this and where they will not eat meat, there are other options. I also believe that there is a misconception to think that vegetarians eat only vegetables, there are plenty of options to do this and be fine.
Some things change over time and others do not, how do you feel today the songs you wrote as a teenager?
Even when I have not the same mind at that time (which is obvious because he was 16 years old), I like to sing those songs, because I remember what I felt, who I am and where I come from, and also because I see lot of people in the audience experiences them in the same way. I think in that case no matter how much time has passed since the original moment, what matters is to be genuine.
You say you believe these days may come up a band like The RUNAWAYS and not seen as a product?
Phew, what a question ... It is possible but highly unlikely. I think The RUNAWAYS had a place in which to grow and learn and do tours. We had a lot of press, but very different than it is now, it's all exposed 24x7. One needs to know to create and privacy, and be on display all the time does not help to know who you are. It also leads people to not give bands time to grow.
How do you think developed the treatment of women in rock? Is it better or worse?
Not necessarily better or worse ... I think women have the right to grab an instrument and do what they like, but I doubt that very feminine attitude of "we're women and we play rock 'has changed too much, nor do they favor. I think that even in 2012, is all quite complicated.
