Super Bowl pick wins Justin Verlander Scripps Howard Super Sage Award

Justin Verlander may need a bigger trophy case.
Barely two months after winning the American League Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards, the Detroit Tigers pitcher captured the Scripps Howard Super Sage Award on Sunday thanks to his perfect Super Bowl prediction.
Of the 115 participants in Scripps Howard's 2012 Celebrity Super Bowl Poll, Verlander was the only one who picked the New York Giants to win, 21-17.
Scripps Howard has received 2,149 celebrity predictions since it began the Celebrity Poll in 1986. Verlander is just the third celebrity to pick the winning team and the score exactly right, joining tennis great Martina Navratilova (1998) and actor Dennis Farina (2005).
Sunday night shortly after the game, Verlander tweeted about his triumph, posting #proudwinner to his Twitter account.
Verlander said he picked the Giants because they "were just a better all around team and had more momentum."
And nailing the score? "Honestly (I) just thought they'd score three TDs and (the) Pats would have two TDs and a FG. Didn't think a safety and a miss(ed) 2-point attempt would be involved," Verlander recounted.
Verlander became the 10th winner of the Super Sage Award. Golfing legend Arnold Palmer won the first one in 2003, followed by Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, Farina, the late Pennsylvania congressman John Murtha, magician duo Penn & Teller, the Rev. Pat Robertson, actress Patricia De Leon, actor Joe Mantegna and last year's winner, the San Diego Chicken, aka Ted Giannoulas.
Verlander's victory wasn't secured until New England quarterback Tom Brady's Hail Mary pass on the game's final play was batted down in the end zone. Had the pass been completed for a touchdown and the Patriots made the extra point, Miss America Laura Kaeppler would have won the Super Sage Award.
Sixty celebrities picked the Giants, 50 picked the Patriots and five jokingly picked other teams or said they couldn't decide. This was the 18th time in the Celebrity Poll's 27-year history that most celebrities picked the winning team.
Rock star JOAN JETT picked New York, the seventh consecutive year she has picked the winning team. Jett moved within one of the Celebrity Poll record streak held by actor Haley Joel Osment, who picked eight straight Super Bowl winners between 2000-07.
Osment, who portrayed a kid who could see dead people in the movie, "The Sixth Sense," can also see Super Bowl winners. He was right again this year, picking the Giants to win, 34-31. He has picked 12 out of the last 13 Super Bowl champions.
Opera star Placido Domingo has never made an incorrect prediction since he first began participating in the Scripps Howard Celebrity Bowl Poll in 2003. He has been right six times, including this year, but he has not participated five years.
Verlander said he watched the game with his girlfriend and a couple of friends in Lakeland, Fla. And the baseball ace said this was the first football-related trophy he's ever won.
"I won a fantasy football league a couple years ago, and placed second in my Tigers league last year," Verlander said. "No trophy, just pride and (a) round of drinks."
