Rockin' the Wish with JOAN JETT and Gabrielle Anwar at The InterContinental Miami

JOAN JETT kicks ass. Always has, always will. In The RUNAWAYS, the guitar-strapped rock goddess set the stage for every riot grrrl to come. Gone solo, she proved without a doubt that women can not only roar on their own, but that those roars can resound around stadiums the world over. Pit the Queen of Rock alongside Burn NoticeÔs ass-kicking Gabrielle Anwar and, well, you've got a hard-charged night to contend with. That's just what happened last Saturday at the 17th Annual InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball. I, for one of many, truly hope all the bruises don't soon heal.
This year's gala was themed to Truman Capote's infamous Black-and-White Ball, which took place at The Plaza lo those many moons ago. Like its predecessor, version 2011 attracted the proverbial creme-de-la-creme. Unlike the Big Bad Apple blowout (which of course was thrown to honor Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham), Miami's massive night was made to make the day of others.
On the White Carpet, Jett rolled with the same stroll that made her mighty mark back before she was even of drinking age. Feisty, fearsome and full of a fully-lived life, the ever-on songstress was as candid as she was charming. I mentioned that I caught The RUNAWAYS opening for The Ramones around the corner at Gusman Center when I was but a wee lad; Jett's eyes lit up with the spark of great creation.
"That was one of my favorite tours ever," she told me. "All of us were young and hungry and determined. And the crowds were wonderful."
High praise for a rocker with such pedigree; then again, The Ramones (and The RUNAWAYS) remain well worthy. So too, the legacy of Jett herself, whose recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination will either lead to her rightful induction or riots in the streets. I mean, really. Is there anyone more deserving of the honor? I think not.
The honor of getting to chat with the legend was all mine, however. In fact, it was Friday's phone call, after Jett suggested I come up and say "Hi!," which convinced me to attend the Ball in the first place. I don't generally work carpetsÑred, white, or otherwise. But when JOAN JETT says to do something, only a fool would not comply.
Damn good that I did, too, because that enabled me to also come face-to-face with Gabrielle Anwar, whose reeling role in Burn Notice has made her the most roarful woman on TVÑnot to mention a bona fide Miami icon. Our previous exchange was via email, but even then I got a sense of how candid she too could be, especially after I'd asked her how she got the nod to be this year's Make-A-Wish celebrity auctioneer.
"I'm sleeping with the Chairman," replied Anwar, not at all pulling her famous punch.
That Chairman is The Forge's Shareef Malnik, who worked the white carpet side-by-side with his not-so-newly beloved, and who seemed to be having a veritable blast. And why wouldn't he? Any man who has Anwar playing Bonnie to their Clyde has every right to enjoy every moment.
The gun-toting Gabrielle kept up the candor throughout our white carpet drive-by, right to its quick conclusion:
"When was the last time you kicked someone's ass?," I asked.
Anwar turned to Malnik and said: "I don't know, honey. When was that; this morning?"
Like I implied, Malknik's one luck fella indeed.
After Anwar deftly worked the room and announced that the South Florida chapter of Make-A-Wish had passed the $10 million mark, a masked JOAN JETT sauntered on to the stage and let loose with her trademark stomp. Anwar and Malnik were front and center while the grand dame rocked through her catalogue of classics; as was I. And though I know the proceeds of the event went on to make wishes for many others, it was my wish that was made on Saturday night.
Gotta love tough chicks.
