JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS - Live @ 100 Club London

JOAN JETT and her current crew played a show at London's famous 100 Club before they do a support slot at the Green Day gig at Wembley on Saturday and she absolutely killed a capacity crowd with an hour and a half of blistering punk & roll.
As this elfin figure took the stage and flashed a shy grin at the crowd she looked all of her twenty five years old (whaddaya mean 52 -- no way chum) and, surrounded by a band who all looked to be at least two feet taller than Jett, dominated the stage for the whole set.
She kicked off with 'Bad Reputation' and got the crowd bouncing but when she kicked into the RUNAWAYS classic 'Cherry Bomb' the audience were right there with her, singing it and starting to raise the temperature to seriously sweaty levels. JOAN JETT might not have played a club gig in London for twenty years but there are a hell of a lot of her fans here and they were out in force.
A wicked version of 'Do You Wanna Touch' got the spike-haired and leather-clad masses thrusting arms in the air and she settled into the meat of her set rattling out powerful versions of 'Androgynous', 'Backlash' and 'Victim Of Circumstance' almost without pausing for breath.
Her guitar style is not what you would call 'adventurous' but together with her band she set up a buzz saw of three chord power and her vocals, throaty and with a 'Noo Joisey' rasp to her words rang out above the dynamic and metronomic drums; classic punk but with the spirit of rock 'n' roll. One of her early heroes was Suzi Quattro and she has a lot in common in the way that she dominates the stage without a huge physical presence.
The hits kept on coming; 'I Love The Fire' and 'Fake Friends' and then a deeply disturbed sounding 'Fetish' brought the more bohemian in the crowd up to the front.
'I Love Rock & Roll' got the arms waving again and then the anthemic 'Crimson & Clover' got the place looking like a football crowd with arms waving - the only thing missing were the scarves!
She always was a brilliantly professional performer but she looked as though she was having a good time and the crowd were certainly right there with her through 'I Hate Myself For Loving You'.
It's always a risk to go back to see the stars of your youth and impressionable days but JOAN JETT proved tonight that if you had it then there is no reason to lose it. Belting stuff and Green Day will have to watch their laurels on Saturday.
