Review: Big bad JOAN JETT, looking vintage and strutting what her mama gave her, delivered a refreshing punk rock performance, courtesy of her beloved BLACKHEARTS.
Hearkening back to her teenage Runaway years, the godmother of punk gave the Summer Celebration crowd Friday what brought her thus far: Edgy attitude and a delicious mezzo-soprano vocal range that included her trademark "Ooowwww" scream, which she belted out numerous times during the night.
Pulling the audience in with her and belting on the guitar better than any of her male counterparts, the accomplished trailblazer dipped into some of her new licks, while saving the best for last with her well-known hits. Her band played admirably with full backup harmonies and successful crowd interaction.
Jett, Rolling Stone magazine's No. 87th guitarist of all time, appeared to enjoy her "bad reputation," and her gestures, spitting and eye-rolling only reinforced what many in the crowd seemed all too ready to acknowledge. Sometimes bad can be good.
