'Embracing life and one another'

Having fun, by far, is the overriding purpose of the Red Hat Society.
But Barb Lesiak, queen bee of the Elmwood Park-based Queen of Hearts chapter, believes the group offers more.
"And that is to bring together women who might possibly yesterday have been sitting home and wondering what there is to do," Lesiak said.
The group includes members from Elmwood Park and Northlake.
"Today, they see an article about red hatting or see a group of red hatters and respond to that, so that tomorrow they are out buying that red hat and looking for a group to join.
"But it's not just about the ones that are looking for something to do," she continued. "It's also about women who are 'making a conscious choice about what kind of older women we are on our way to becoming, embracing life and one another in equal measure.'
"We have become mentors without even trying. Women under the age of 50, referred to as Pink Hatters, are looking up to us, and rather than dreading middle age, are greeting it with vigor."
That vigor will be on display when society members perform their tribute to JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Oak Park Arms, 408 S. Oak Park Ave. in Oak Park.
'Untalent' contest
"When we were at the Illinois Red Hat Convention in Peoria in October, they had an 'untalent' contest," Lesiak said. "So, what the heck. A few of us entered it.
"We had just seen JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, and we thought this would be the way to go.
"We took second place, which I think is great since it was 'untalent' and we did not want to come in first.
"Our lead 'guitarist' is almost 70," Lesiak said.
The concert also will include a two-member Abba tribute.
The show is open to the public.
Admission is $5 to offset the cost of prizes, gifts and snacks if people want to donate, according to Lesiak.
"It's our pleasure to bring joy to the ladies at the Oak Park Arms," Lesiak said. "It's all about paying forward.
"My dad was a resident, and I thought it would be nice to do this for them."
