JOAN JETT Rocks Hard In Nissan Live Set

by Russell Hall
JOAN JETT was at her leather-clad best in a recent show staged for the "Nissan Live Sets" concert series. In addition to delivering full-throttle performances of classic fare like "Bad Reputation, "Crimson and Clover," and the RUNAWAYS' "Cherry Bomb," Jett included punked-up versions of the Replacements' "Androgynous" and Sly Stone's "Everyday People."
During the Q&A portion of the show, Jett fielded questions on topics that ranged from how she got into rock and roll, to the status of the forthcoming RUNAWAYS movie.
"As a young teenager, listening to Donnie Osmond and the Partridge Family - things like that - I transitioned to things like Black Sabbath, the New York Dolls, Free's 'All Right Now,' and T. Rex's 'Bang a Gong,'" Jett said. "Hearing those guitars made me want to do that. I asked my parents for a guitar for Christmas, and they actually got me one."
Speaking of guitars, one audience member thanked Jett for "getting together with Gibson for the Melody Maker model." "I love it," the female fan enthused. "It's so light, and so perfect. I'm a tiny girl, and I need a [small] guitar."
Jett also told the audience she sometimes struggles against cynicism. "When I first started out, I had a beautiful naivetŽ," she said. "Now, I have to struggle to stay involved, and not be cynical. To stay 'light' and to 'be a light' [is important]. I'm so blessed to be doing what I do."
As regards the RUNAWAYS film, Jett assured the audience the movie is "coming along just fine." "I believe they're starting to cast it," she said. "The release date is probably next year, sometime. The movie is a snapshot in time.
The RUNAWAYS were all about going for your dreams."
