JOAN JETT loves rock 'n roll, Gallagher-Bluedorn
from: WCFcourier.com

CEDAR FALLS --- With her left arm in a sling, JOAN JETT proved that she can still rock --- no matter the constraints.

Although the punk legend wasn't able to commandeer her guitar during Friday's concert, the 48-year-old poured her heart into her signature straight-ahead vocals, starting with a rousing version of "Bad Reputation" and ending with a crowd-pleasing cover of "Everyday People."

"If you notice, I'm a little bit laid up, I had to have some surgery to fix some ligaments" Jett told the crowd of 1,200 at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. "But don't be too shy, even though you're sitting down. We like to rock. We like to show off."

Jett, backed by the BLACKHEARTS, played an hour set, followed by a 15-minute encore. The crowd sprang to its feet at the first chords of classics like "I Love Rock 'n Roll" and "Crimson and Clover."

Following Jett's lead, audience members provided the chorus line to "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)."

The rocker also used Friday's concert to showcase some songs off her latest album, "SINNER," released in 2006. Along with "Naked," "Fetish," "Change the World," and "Five," Jett performed the overtly political "Riddles."

"This references the communication skills of our administration --- whether or not we can quite understand what they are trying to communicate with us," she said before diving into a bass-driven critique on President Bush and his policies.

"Big Brother is watchin' you / They're takin' all your rights away, "Jett sang in the bass-driven punk pop anthem. "Don't claim that you represent me cause / I don't believe a word that ya say."

Audience members, many unfamiliar with the song, chuckled during references to "No Child Left Behind," and other public policy issues. Still, those gathered seemed much more enthused to catch the opening bars of Jett's No. 1 hit "I Love Rock 'N Roll" two songs later.

Concert-goer Wendy Hoofnaglespent most of the concert dancing, sometimes inching out into the aisle to jam.

The Cedar Falls woman, who grew up on a steady diet of JOAN JETT hits, said she was little disappointed that the rocker was unable to play guitar Friday. Still, the fan left the concert beaming.

"She opened with 'Bad Reputation,' one of my favorite songs, and that just set the tone for the whole show," Hoofnagle said. "It was great."
