STORY LINE: 1974. Before JOAN JETT created her own band, she was part of THE RUNAWAYS, a seminal all-girl punk rock group pulled together by producer KIM FOLEY and fronted by Jett and 15-year-old CHERIE CURRIE. The band released some hit songs, toured Japan, partied hard, got burned out on booze, pills and drugs and broke up within four years..

Role # 1 - CHERIE CURRIE
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

She's a beautiful blonde surfer girl growing up in the 1970s in California. Cherie isn't as confident or comfortable as her twin sister Marie, but she makes up for this with her defiance and punk rock attitude. After chopping off her hair and dying it platinum, she becomes an androgynous David Bowie-type who starts a brawl at her school talent show and gets noticed at a club by manager Kim Foley. Her audition for The RUNAWAYS is awkward and intimidating for her and she nearly gives up, but with Joan's encouragement and Kim's insults, she learns to release her inner sex kitten (both purr and growl) for a song tailor-made for her: "Cherry Bomb." She is described by Kim as "Brigitte Bardot in a trailer park". Cherie's signature look (fishnet stockings, corsets) quickly makes her the main cover girl and most popular member of The RUNAWAYS, to the resentment and frustration of the rest of the band. Cherie's home life is deeply troubled; her mother abandons Cherie and Marie to live in Indonesia with her boyfriend, and her father is a depressed alcoholic. Cherie's own addictions include uppers, downers, cocaine and booze, and before she's had a chance to truly understand her sudden, overwhelming fame or come to terms with her problems, she has burned out and quit the band...LEAD

Role # 2 - JOAN JETT
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Tough and pretty, with dark hair and pale skin, she is a ferociously talented, self-taught rhythm guitarist who lives for rock 'n' roll. Cool as hell, full of snarly attitude, she's a strutting rock star in black leather who writes her own songs but can also pick the most effective covers to re-do. She's knowledgeable about the key players in the music business and positions herself to get in front of manager Kim Foley, who then introduces her to Sandy West, a drummer in search of more band members. Her relationship with Cherie is strong and quite affectionate at first, but Joan despises the cheesy sex-kitten publicity Cherie courts and wants the band to get attention for the right reasons: the music. Despite the implosion of The RUNAWAYS, and her possible regret at losing Cherie, Joan isn't through with her music career; not by a long shot...LEAD

Role # 3 - MARIE CURRIE
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Cherie's paternal twin sister, blonde, she's more mature than Cherie, a bit wilder, slightly taller, and the first to get to her period and have a boyfriend (who is 28 years old). A prototypical angelic 1970s California girl, she is softer and more feminine than her punk rock sister, and enjoys popularity with the cool kids at school, so she's a bit embarrassed when Cherie goes nuts at the school talent show, and dismissive of Cherie's prospects as a rock star. She's the one who gets Cherie turned on to quaaludes. Ultimately, Marie is loyal and forgiving, though she's hurt to be left behind, working at a fast food restaurant and looking after their alcoholic dad, when Cherie goes to Japan on tour with The RUNAWAYS...LEAD

Role # 4 - SANDY WEST
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Blonde, tough but warm and genuinely kind, "Miss California with a joint in her mouth and a chip on her shoulder," she's a skilled drummer and singer looking for more members for her punk rock band. She is introduced to JOAN JETT by music manager Kim Foley, and the two girls hit it off from the get-go. Later, she auditions several other girls for the group The RUNAWAYS, including Cherie Currie and Lita Ford, and tours Japan with them, partying hard...SUPPORTING.

A large-breasted, angry, long-haired, "total badass," growly teenage rock chick and lead guitarist, described by band manager Kim Foley as "the love child of Sofia Loren and Ritchie Blackmore", she is Cherie's impatient, scoffing rival who becomes jealous of the attention Cherie receives in Japan and of all the magazine covers that feature Cherie to the exclusion of the other girls...SUPPORTING

Role # 7 - KIM FOLEY
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
MALE. He was 6'5" and super-skinny, "a cross between Andy Warhol and Frankenstein", Kim is a band manager who used to work with Zappa and The Byrds. He wears outrageous, bizarre outfits that somehow come across as elegant on him. An aggressive and enthusiastic ball of energy, he spews a vast array of colorfully expressive obscenities to get his points across. He is approached by a nervous young JOAN JETT at a club, and finds her both amusing and intriguing. As a sort of experiment, he introduces her to drummer Sandy West and loves the results of their burgeoning band, so he locates some more punk rock chicks with the right look. He puts together and packages The RUNAWAYS, as well as a hit song for Cherie Currie called "Cherry Bomb." He's got a great eye for publicity and sex appeal. He becomes a tough, "distorted father figure" to the group and constantly berates and harangues them for not going far enough with their rock 'n' roll personas and style. After the band implodes, Kim reveals in an interview that their ingratitude upset him...LEAD
