Crowd pleasers

The Manitowoc County Fair isn't limited to swine, bingo and tractor pulls — it's also about a little thing called rock.

And JOAN JETT sure loves rock 'n' roll.

In the midst of a tour that includes stops in Long Island, St. Paul, Detroit, Chicago and Toronto, Jett will be touching down here in Manitowoc.

JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will be the musical headliner Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Manitowoc County Fair, which will be held at the Manitowoc County Expo.

Take a look at the crowd that evening, and don't be surprised with what you see — punks, indie rockers, pop lovers, metal heads, classic rockers, radicals and conservatives. They all love Jett.

The rocker wrote "Cherry Bomb" at the age of 15, skyrocketing a career that had her headlining clubs two years later with Tom Petty, Talking Heads, Television and Cheap Trick as her opening acts. She has nine Top 40 hit singles under her belt and eight platinum and gold LPs.

She was killed off in an on-screen karate fight with Chuck Norris, has shared the big screen with Michael J. Fox and Gena Rowlands, and was in the original cast of "The Rocky Horror Show" on Broadway. She toured with The Police, Queen and Aerosmith.

It's safe to say, she's kind of a big deal.

Famous for songs like "I Love Rock N' Roll," "I Hate Myself For Loving You" and "Bad Reputation" in the 1980s, Jett said her new album, "SINNER," is about expanding her lyrical content and testing herself.

"It's nice that people think that I've been influential to some people, but I say I'm just a rock and roller," she told Guitar World magazine. "I was just one of the first women to really play hard rock and mean it — to sweat and get dirty. And I intend to keep doing it until I'm in my box."

Steve Holy, on the other hand, is a little bit country.

Described by The Dallas Morning News as Elvis Presley meets Dwight Yoakam meets Ricky Nelson meets Chris Isaak, the county fair's musical headliner on Friday, Aug. 24, will serve up a blend of 1950s rock 'n' roll, pop and traditional country.

Holy is best known for the No. 1 single "Good Morning Beautiful" off his debut record, "Blue Moon," in 2000. His second CD — "Brand New Girlfriend" — was released in 2006 and garnered another No. 1 hit with the title track.

"I really don't want to be 'labeled,' " Holy said in his online biography. "The majority of my influences are from the traditional country genre, but I feel a connection to the music made in the '50s and '60s. My heart is there in that style of music. It was really heartfelt back then and I'm into the simplicity of the music. It's how I want to make music — simply heartfelt."

Holy is following in the footsteps this year of some big country shoes — belonging to Trick Pony, who performed here last year.

Though maybe a lesser-known star, his big brown eyes and obvious lyrical compassion (he wrote his first song at the age of 13 for his older brother, Danny, who died at 21) are sure to tug on the heart strings of many.

And who knows, maybe he'll be spotted getting off his tour bus in just boxers and a pair of cowboy boots, roaming around in a pair of Playboy slippers, performing on stage with his zipper open or ripping his jeans right down the rear mid-song.

All have been known to happen.
