With a band like Cake, you get a musical gumbo.
Although rooted in alternative rock, the group's music explores multiple genres, from funk and ska to rap and jazz.
The band's show Friday night in Council Bluffs is the first in the Stir Concert Cove summer music series.
Formed in Sacramento, Calif., in 1991, Cake has released five studio albums that have received acclaim for their unconventional arrangements and instrumentation. The band's hit singles include "The Distance," "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle," "No Phone," "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and a remake of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive."
Two nights after the Cake concert, veteran rock band JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS will take over the stage at Stir.
Jett is best known for her 1982 hit, "I Love Rock N Roll," which spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
A Philadelphia native who moved at age 12 to Los Angeles with her family, Jett also scored hits with "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)," "I Hate Myself for Loving You," and a cover of Tommy James and the Shondells' "Crimson and Clover."
The 46-year-old singer-guitarist gained prominence with her first band, the all-girl rock group the RUNAWAYS.
The RUNAWAYS made five albums from 1975 until 1979, when the group disbanded.
She once told Daily Variety, "We certainly utilized to our advantage our image as teenage girls who wore titillating clothes. But we also became an excellent band and made it OK for girls to play rock 'n' roll. It got hard once people focused more on what we were wearing than what we were playing."
After forming the BLACKHEARTS, Jett became a household name and is still seen as a role model for many young female musicians.
Last year, she released her latest album, "SINNER," on her own label, BLACKHEART RECORDS.
