Country sensation Jake Owen, The October also to play
Organizers of the annual NIBROC Festival have announced most of the entertainment concert series for 2007, calling it one of the strongest lineups in the history of the 55-year-old event.
Rockers JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS and Starship will join up-and-coming country music sensation Jake Owen for a three-day triple-whammy of music nearly guaranteed to satisfy.
"The comment someone has every year after the last show is 'how will you top this next year," said Corbin Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bruce Carpenter, the main organizer of NIBROC. "I don't know if we've topped last year or not, but I think we definitely have a lineup that is going to draw a lot of attention from the country and rock standpoint.
Landing Jett has been a nearly three-year saga for Carpenter, who said scheduling conflicts and travel arrangements prevented the show from happening in the past.
"I guess from talking to a lot of people last year, the fact that I was so close to signing her, I realized, created a lot of excitement with people," Carpenter said.
Sometimes called "the queen of punk" and the "girl Elvis," JOAN JETT and her backup bank The BLACKHEARTS is best known for the Billboard No. 1 single "I Love Rock and Roll," which debuted in 1982. Other popular tunes include "I Hate Myself for Loving You," Do You Wanna Touch Me," "Light of Day," and "Little Liar."
Jett started her career when she helped found the band The RUNAWAYS, a move that met with success. After, she branched out into a solo career. Since, she's formed her own record label (BLACKHEART RECORDS) and has even appeared as an actress in movies and live theater.
Jett will play the last night of the festival, Saturday, Aug. 11.
On Friday, Aug. 10, popular 70s and 80s rock act Starship, featuring the vocals of Mickey Thomas, will entertain crowds at the main stage.
"He was the original voice on a lot of their hits," Carpenter said. "When I sign these bands, I always want them to be as original as possible, especially in the vocals. That's kind of the trend we've started and we want to continue that."
Starships Top 40 hits include the 80s smash "We Built This City," "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," Sara," It's Not Over 'Til It's Over," (which became the official theme of Major League Baseball), "Laying It On The Line," "Find Your Way Back," "No Way Out," "Winds of Change," "Stranger," "It's Not Enough," and "Fooled Around and Fell in Love."
Thomas has revamped the band and the show will included an expanded set list which includes multi-platinum hits from Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship. The band also includes powerful female vocalist Stephanie Calvert.
"I think Starship is one of those bands that when I throw their name out, a lot of people don't remember what they sing, but when I start naming songs, they didn't realize how many they would recognize," Carpenter said.
Country music fans will get a treat Thursday, Aug. 9 at NIBROC when newly minted country sensation Jake Owen takes the main stage playing hits off his new album "Startin' With Me," including "Yee Haw," "Bad In Me," and "Something About a Woman."
"He's young and he's had a couple of hits, so I think he will be a big draw," Carpenter said. "I'm real excited about having Jake Owen at NIBROC."
Carpenter said he still plans to sign a gospel music group and opening bands for all artists, which he will announce at a later date.
The opening band for JOAN JETT has already been booked - new wave rock band The October, which feature Corbin's own Michael Lloyd on bass guitar.
Start times for the shows will be announced in the near future.
