Trail-blazing rockers JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS return to Harrah's Lake Tahoe for a roof poppin' rock 'n' roll blowout in the legendary South Shore Room on Saturday night, Jan. 6.
Often called "the girl Elvis," JOAN JETT founded the all-girl rock group The RUNAWAYS, while still in her early teens. Their hit "Cherry Bomb" made them an international sensation. They group disbanded in 1980 and Jett moved to New York to begin her solo career. On a trip to England to work on music with The Sex Pistols, she was introduced to songwriter and producer KENNY LAGUNA. They immediately clicked musically and creatively, and were soon in studio creating Jett's self-titled, debut album. Unfortunately, back in the States, more than 20 labels rejected the album. Jett and Laguna decided to release it independently on their own Blackheart record label. Jett had inadvertently become the first female performer with her own label.
Jett then formed The BLACKHEARTS, featuring guitarist Ricky Byrd, bassist Gary Ryan and drummer Lee Crystal. Their first release in 1981, I Love Rock 'n Roll, became Jett's biggest success thanks to the title track, which spent eight weeks at number one. It remains Billboard's Number 28 song of all time.
A string of Top 40 hits soon followed, as well as sell-out tours. The follow-up single to her now famous anthem was a cover of Tommy James's "Crimson and Clover." The hit single reached the Top Ten, along with a single of Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)." In 1988 Jett released Up Your Alley and found another instant hit with "I Hate Myself For Loving You" and scoring her second platinum LP.
In the following years, Jett dedicated her time toward a number of other pursuits. In 2001 she turned to Broadway to star in the original cast of "The Rocky Horror Show" in the role of Columbia. She's made major musical contributions to movie blockbusters such as "Shrek," "Charlie's Angels" and "Monster." Jett has also produced a number of albums for bands like The Germs, and tracks for Bikini Kill and Dischord Records' Circus Lupus.
JOAN JETT has made it her mission to spread the word of great rock and punk music and recently found a niche with Sirius Radio and her satellite radio show "Radio Revolution with JOAN JETT" She reformed the BLACKHEARTS and released the album Fettish in 1999 and Naked in 2004. Her latest CD, SINNER, was released earlier this year and Blender Magazine just put Jett at the top of their list of the "hottest women in rock!"
