A blistering set from JOAN JETT

CLIFTON PARK -- JOAN JETT started rocking when she was a teenager back in the '70s.
And she hasn't stopped.
At 47, Jett continues to grind out the same kind of blistering, gritty, distortion-ripped rock 'n' roll that she's been kicking out since she recorded "Cherry Bomb" as co-founder of seminal '70s female act The RUNAWAYS.
Even though she hasn't had a hit in years (she scored back in 1990), Jett's bad reputation still precedes her, as it did on Friday night at Northern Lights. About 1,000 rabid JOAN JETT fans, many of them female and some of them sporting jet black hair and really red lipstick, sang along to the hits and impressed Jett with their spunk because they didn't wait for her to invite them to join in.
The diminutive Jett -- she stands all of five feet tall -- was ageless on Friday night, looking and sounding the same as she did back in the early '80s. Wearing a sleeveless leather top and sporting a shag hairdo, Jett opened by leading the BLACKHEARTS through a vintage version of "Bad Reputation."
She kept the rock coming, following "Reputation" with a cover of The RUNAWAYS' "Cherry Bomb," "Light of Day" and "Do U Wanna Touch," all of which had fans cheering and singing along loudly with Jett, who smiled at the compliment.
Jett was well aware of the fact that more than a few fans in the club weren't born when she was an MTV staple back in the '80s. She joked about her age, saying "This is an old band. We're old, baby."
It didn't show, not for a moment. Jett, with her throaty rasp rock perfection, blasted through a nice mix of hits and new songs from her latest disc, "SINNER." The new stuff, especially "Change The World," "Five," "Naked" and a searing reading of "Fetish" was stomping retro pop-punk, sounding much like her old stuff -- not a bad thing by any means.
The new songs rocked, propelled by Jett's sheer love for rock 'n' roll and playing live. Slick with sweat, Jett bounced around the crowded stage, kicking out classics such as "Love Is Pain" and her cover of "Love Is All Around" -- which was about the only time she showed her age.
She rewarded fans for politely listening to her new songs, closing out with "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Crimson & 'Clover" and "Hate Myself For Loving You." Fans returned the love and then some, screaming, jumping and singing along to show their appreciation.
And why not? Jett rocked Northern Lights on Friday night.
Vincent Black Shadow, a young five-piece act from Vancouver, played a solid 45-minute set that started to wear thin after about 30 minutes. Michael Lisi is a freelance music critic from Clifton Park and a frequent contributor to the Times Union.
