JOAN JETT plays to Tempe crowd

Considered by most critics and fans to be the queen of punk rock, and coming off a succesfull stint as a headliner on the Warped Tour earlier this year, it was expected that rock legend JOAN JETT and her band The BLACKHEARTS would easily fill the 1,000-capacity Marquee Theatre in Tempe Saturday night, but fewer than 600 fans came out to witness Jett's 90-minute set.
Jett, dressed in black leather pants and a black leather vest that showed off her many tattoos, started the set with her classic "Bad Reputation," which became the theme song for the cult TV classic "Freaks and Geeks," with The BLACKHEARTS, a group of 20-something guys, ably backing Jett with vicious power-chord licks.
Jett ripped out such hits as "Cherry Bomb" by her old band, the RUNAWAYS -- the all-female punk group she helped found as a teenager in the mid-70s -- and "Light of Day," the title title tune from the mid-'80s film co-starring Jett and Michael J. Fox.
Jett also performed such classics as the early '80s anthem "I Love Rock and Roll" and a rave-up cover of "Love Is All Around," better known as the theme song for the '70s sitcom "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," as well as the Tommy James and The Shondells cover "Crimson and Clover."
Plagued by early sound troubles -- Jett appeared ticked off at the sound guys, saying at one point ,"We'll come back when we get the stage sound together" and "We'll do what we did this afternoon, OK?," presumably referencing a successfrul sound check earlier in the day, but the band was able to forge ahead with such new tunes as "Naked," a cover of The Replacements' "Androgynous" and the Jett classic "I Hate Myself For Loving You."
"She's definitely influenced girl's punk rock and girl's fashion," said Sarah Bunch, 24, of Tempe. "You know how many people try to look like JOAN JETT?"
Plenty of people turned out Saturday to witness up-and-coming rockers Eagles Of Death Metal, who played a tight, crowd-pleasing 45-minute set of tongue-in-cheek rock 'n' roll that featured Eagles front man Jesse Hughes primping and preening across stage like Spinal Tap's David St. Hubbins, combing his hair and bushy mustache in between tunes to the delight of the band's fans.
"Let's hear just the ladies!" Hugh cried as he held the mic out to the crowd, the girls in the audience roaring their approval.
Over-the-top stage antics aside, the Eagles Of Death Metal, whose 2006 album "Death By Sexy" is one of the best rock discs of the year, tore up such tunes such as the infectious "Cherry Cola" and "I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)."
Unpublicized opening band Riverboat Gamblers -- who last month played a blistering set at The Clubhouse Music Venue in Tempe -- more than lived up to their reputation as one of punk rock's best new live acts. The Denton, Texas, band played a spirited but all too short set of great late-'60s- and '70s-inspired rock 'n' roll that had that had the gathering crowd roaring their approval from the first note.
"I came to see the Riverboat Gamblers tonight," said Tim Newton, 31, of Tempe. "They're the real deal for me."
