Jett fuel keeps rock hard

Why keep donning leather and black eyeliner some 30 years into a career of R&R?
Well, if you’re JOAN JETT, it’s because you still look good with dark clothes, hair and eyes and because, as she sang 25 years ago in her biggest hit to date, she loves rock ’n’ roll.
As the reigning princess of punk rock, Jett took her BLACKHEARTS on the road for the outdoor skate/punk fest Warped Tour, which bashed and smashed across the country this summer.
She was soaring on killer reviews for her latest CD with the ’hearts, "SINNER," with its hot first single, a cover of the Sweet’s "A.C.D.C.," which featured Carmen Electra in the video. Jett said she rediscovered the song recently, which caused her to flashback to the days of visiting an underage club, Rodney’s English Disco in Los Angeles, where the latest British singles would get bounced stateside.
"It’s the kind of rock I like — provocative," Jett said. She and the BLACKHEARTS will perform on Friday, Oct. 27, at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, 914 N. First St. Tickets are 25 bucks, which includes opening acts Throw Rag and the Eagles of Death Metal. Some of "SINNER’s" songs play with the concept of being true to ones self and making change, though Jett said it wasn’t a conscious effort when the album was being constructed.
"Beyond having love and sex songs, it does touch on these broader themes — some politics, some spirituality," she said. "You can change someone’s world by something as simply being a light, having a smile on your face, being engaging, meeting people’s eyes. To me, that’s what (‘Change the World’) means."
With some huge hits like "I Love Rock and Roll," "Crimson and Clover," "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" and "Bad Reputation," filling a set list for concerts is no problem for Jett. She said she doesn’t like it when bands don’t play the songs the fans expect, and to her, it might mean a band resents the success of a song if it’s not performed.
"You’re so lucky to have been involved and have that happen to you. I made peace with that a long time ago," she said. "I always play the hits. I wouldn’t even conceive of not doing it." For more information, visit mississippinights.
