Hall of a night for L.I. music

The stretch limos seemed like they'd never quit, and the fans sounded as though they'd never quit screaming, as Long Island paid due respect to its musical heritage.
The scene was the first induction ceremony at the new Long Island Music Hall of Fame, which drew some 1,200 music lovers to the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Inductees from JOAN JETT to Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, and from Billy Joel to Little Anthony strutted the red carpet into the theater Sunday night.
"Thank you so much!" KISS drummer Peter Criss called to the crowd with a bow on his way in to the induction.
Blues star Sam Taylor said he came all the way from a gig in Holland to accept his award. "I left my tour to come back to Long Island because this is where I got my start, playing the blues clubs of Riverhead back in 1955," he said. Taylor, 72, said he was accompanied by 27 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Joel said, "I'm off to South Africa, but I had to come here because Long Island means so much to me."
The Long Island Hall of Fame was the brainchild of Richard L'Hommedieu, former publisher of Long Island Entertainment magazine.
"More music has been recorded by artists from Long Island - Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn and Queens - than anywhere else in the world," said L'Hommedieu. "The reason is simple: Musicians always had to record and perform in Manhattan, but could rarely afford to live there."
He said the new hall has chosen its first 50 honorees, who will be inducted over a two-year period. "We wanted to honor musicians of all music genres," he said. "We are also paying tribute to music businesses and educational institutions."
The Sunday night inductees were: Mose Allison; Sam Ash Sr.; Tony Bennett; Gary (U.S.) Bonds; Harry Chapin; George M. Cohan; John Coltrane; Perry Cuomo; James (Jimmy) D'Aquisto; Edward (Little Buster) Forehand; George Gershwin; Richie Havens; JOAN JETT; Billy Joel; Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge; the Long Island members of KISS (Peter Criss, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons); Cyndi Lauper; Little Anthony and the Imperials; the Long Island Philharmonic; Marian McPartland; George (Shadow) Morton; Run-DMC; Neil Sedaka; SUNY Stony Brook; the Stray Cats; Sam Taylor; Twisted Sister; Vanilla Fudge, and Leslie West.
Presenters of the awards included Paul Shaffer of the "The Late Show with David Letterman"; Peter Tork of the Monkees; Felix Cavaliere of the Young Rascals; C.J. Ramone of the Ramones; songwriter Jimmy Webb, and actor Alec Baldwin.
Jett, the first to be inducted, said, "I came to Long Island in 1979 and lived in Long Beach. I started playing in Roslyn clubs and in Eisenhower Park, and I recorded my hit albums in Syosset. I owe my success to the support of the Long Island radio stations."
