Jett epitomizes LI's reputation

The unofficial theme song of the Long Island Music Hall of Fame? That's easy: JOAN JETT's "Bad Reputation."
"That's so fitting for Long Island and what we're trying to do," said Richard L'Hommedieu, the hall's chairman. "It's perfect for us."
The song -- with the chorus of "I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation" -- was front-and-center at the induction ceremonies last night as the first song played for the first-ever inductee. Jett said she would have been happy to play it, except she had to leave the ceremony early so that she could make her sold-out show at Irving Plaza, which she had committed to months earlier. However, Jett said she was humbled by the induction and her role in the hall.
"We get overlooked I suppose, being so close to a big city," said Jett, who has lived in Long Beach since 1979 and recorded "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" in Syosset. "The fact that this induction exists is important. There's a viable music scene here and it's about time it gets recognized."
Jett's manager, KENNY LAGUNA, who co-wrote "Bad Reputation" with Jett, said the use of the song is even more fitting since "Bad Reputation" got its start on Long Island radio.
Blues singer Sam Taylor said the hall should help change the Island's reputation in the music industry, by letting people know how much music actually has come from the area, something that can only change when people feel proud enough to tell people that they are actually from here.
"When you have a program that honors Peter Criss of KISS, John Coltrane, George Gershwin and Vanilla Fudge, you really have an eclectic, impressive music scene," said award presenter Paul Shaffer, from "Late Show with David Letterman." "It's about time for people to find out about Long Island's reputation."
