JOAN JETT fuels up for another ride with provocative 'SINNER'

Everyone seems to love JOAN JETT's brand of rock 'n' roll these days. When Jett headlined Vans Warped Tour this past summer, punk bands gave their props during interviews; others did so from the stage. Critical praise was effusive. Concertgoers talked about her more than the hyped acts. At Fairplex, Jett and the BLACKHEARTS blitzed through a killer Warped set, where new school punks pumped their leather-studded arms in appreciation. New tunes 'Change the World" and 'Riddles" fit well alongside crunchy guitar-led stomps 'Bad Reputation" and 'Cherry Bomb."
"We had a real blast," admitted Jett, in a phone interview from her home in Long Island, N.Y. 'The camaraderie was amazing. It was fun to be a fan and play (music) at the same time."
Jett, who turns 48 next week, said the experience surpassed her expectations.
The trailblazing female rocker has a Sirius Satellite Radio show under the auspices of Little Steven Van Zandt's nationally syndicated Underground Garage. The 'Sopranos" actor/E Street Band guitarist frequently spotlights Jett's new album on his program and Billboard Magazine column.
Jett said she appreciates Van Zandt's support. 'It's been really wonderful and I'm grateful for the opportunity."
In a testament to the widespread appeal of Jett's '80s catalog, pop star Pink did a new Sunday Night Football theme modeled after 'I Hate Myself For Loving You." Carmen Electra, an admitted fan, appears in the video to new Jett single 'A.C.D.C." Rolling Stone magazine even named her one of the '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."
After a seven-year absence, Jett finally has fresh music available, courtesy of the raucous studio disc 'SINNER." The CD title refers to 'the climate we live in today, which is very polarized and judgmental; people declaring they know what's good for me."
Half the tunes date back to the late '90s. They were produced by Bob Rock (The Cult) and Ted Templeman (Van Halen), in association with longtime Jett collaborator KENNY LAGUNA. Le Tigre's Kathleen Hanna co-wrote four tracks and did vocal arrangements. The kick-butt collection is both cohesive and modern.
"I'm not going to put up with things sounding too dramatically different. It doesn't work for me. This is where my heart is. I think it was easy being consistent with the production (because) Kenny was present for all of it."
What has kept her musical partnership with Laguna strong for more than 25 years? 'We're really good friends," she explained. 'And we don't compete with each other--we're fine with either one of us getting the credit."
From the aggressive 'Naked," sinister 'Fetish," and simmering 'Baby Blue" to covers of The Replacements' 'Androgynous" and The Sweet's 'A.C.D.C.," sexuality is a prevalent theme. If prudes complain about the CD content, Jett thinks they're hypocrites.
"Considering pretty much everyone got here by sex, it's funny that Americans think the media is saturated with it," she said. 'If Janet Jackson's (breast) pops out by accident on the Super Bowl or if rock 'n' roll artists bring up sex -- which is what rock 'n' roll means --Americans are aghast. I don't get it."
Anyone familiar with Jett's history knows she plays by her own rules. As a teenager inspired by glam rock in the mid-'70s, Jett formed The RUNAWAYS, the first all-girl rock band.
When she went solo and more than two dozen labels turned down her demo tape, Jett and Laguna started BLACKHEART RECORDS. 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll" spent nearly two months atop the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. She went on to score eight more top 40 hits, including 'Little Liar," Tommy James' 'Crimson & Clover" and Bruce Springsteen's 'Light of Day." Fans should be pleased to find those songs back in circulation since remastered and expanded versions of Jett's back catalog are being rolled out this year.
Decades have passed since Jett, the Go-Go's, Bangles and others initially found success. Do women have it any easier in 2006?
"It's the same as ever. The thing that's dangerous is the illusion of equality -- that women and female rock 'n' rollers have arrived, when really, it's all in name only."
