JOAN JETT is the headliner for the 146th Woodstock Fair

WOODSTOCK— Another dime in the jukebox won’t get you much of a song these days.

But a ten spot will get you the real live act.

JOAN JETT, crooner of "I Love Rock N’ Roll" and other hits, is to perform tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. at the 146th Woodstock Fair.

Presented by the Woodstock Agricultural Society, the four-day fair opens tomorrow at the Woodstock Fairgrounds on Route 169.

In addition to Ms. Jett, there are a number of new attractions and enhancements this year, the fair’s general manager, Fern E. Phaneuf, said yesterday in a phone interview.

There’s the 15-foot sand sculpture of a barn, with animated pigs, sheep and cows, one of the best highlights, Mr. Phaneuf said.

Also, about 700 horses will make for one of the biggest equine events in the fair’s history.

A new family fun center features karaoke, dancing and food contests. That’s pizza- and doughnut-eating contests for youths, and pizza- and blueberry pie-eating for adults.

No cookie contest this year. It makes way for tomorrow’s "The Great American Spam Championship."

Go-cart racing will draw participants from as far as New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Mr. Phaneuf said.

Gates will open at 9 a.m. tomorrow through Monday. Admission is $10 per day, free for children age 12 and younger. Admission will be by hand stamp only from 9 to 10 p.m., with no admittance after 10 p.m.

Today is the last day to take advantage of advance purchase incentives: $30 for admission to all four days, and an 11-ride rate for $15. Advance purchases can be made at all local XtraMart stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Tickets are also available at Putnam Farmers Co-op, Stoggy Hollow, and the Woodstock Fair office.

The fair operates on an $800,000 starting budget, and individual ticket prices weren’t raised this year, despite escalating rates in electricity and fuel needed to run the fair.

"We need to sell tickets," Mr. Phaneuf said.

They have been. Organizations, car dealers and other businesses have bought tickets by the bulk, some to give away to their employees, others for promotional purposes. Either way, they took advantage of a $7 per ticket offer for orders of 100 or more, Mr. Phaneuf said.

"Our advance sales now are probably the highest they’ve been in the history of the fair," he said.

About 250,000 fairgoers attend each year, undoubtedly a boon for the local economy.

"All the hotels within 40 miles of us are booked solid," Mr. Phaneuf said. "You can call all the bed and breakfasts, all the campgrounds. All the little restaurants in this area thank us a thousand times."

There are some hotel spaces locally, though, including the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Dayville. A concierge said last night there are 20 openings for tomorrow, 10 for Sunday, and 50 for Monday. Though a longer drive, a Southbridge Hotel and Conference Center guest service agent said they had more than 100 openings for Labor Day Weekend.

That should be good news for out-of-state JOAN JETT fans. Apparently Ms. Jett has a following in New Hampshire. Mr. Phaneuf said the other day he received about a half dozen calls at his home in Putnam from the 603 area code. Each caller was asking about Ms. Jett.
