JOAN JETT lives life of a 'SINNER' on new album
from: postcrescent.com

The voice on the other end of the line cuts in and out. "KENNY LAGUNA" … pshhh-pshhh … "bad reception here" … pshhhhhh … "I’ll call back."

Four phone calls later, JOAN JETT’s partner/manager/longtime "valet" says, "you’ll never forget this" with a chuckle.
Sitting in the back of her tour bus, just rolling into Charlotte, N.C., on one leg of the Van’s Warped Tour, Jett gets on the line.

Her raucous rocker voice sounds abrasive, but she’s more than willing to chat about anything — from her edgy new album "SINNER" (with riff-tastic, aggressive songs like "Five," "Watersign" and "Naked") to how she’s a role model for other female musicians.

She’s ever the hardcore punk chick she was 25 years ago when she fronted female teen band The RUNAWAYS and went on to sing solo hits like "I Love Rock N’ Roll" and "Bad Reputation."

Jett talked with Weekend before her show Thursday at the Leach Amphitheater in Oshkosh, the final gig of the 15-week Waterfest concert series.

Weekend: The new album, "SINNER," is the first for you in almost a decade. Why such a long time in the making?
Jett:
It was just a stop-and-start process, really. We recorded a bunch of stuff years ago and had problems getting that out on Warner Bros. We went through about five different administrations while I was there in just a few years, which stopped the process each time. It became very frustrating. We parted ways, very amicably. I left with the music.

Weekend: Are there a lot of familiar themes – love, sex – you’re singing about on "SINNER" or do you delve into new issues?
Jett:
I think a lot of the things I’ve shown in the past – everything from sex, relationships, falling in and out of love. Also, there’s things slightly political, spiritual. Socially political, I guess. In that way I’ve branched out. I’ve wanted to write about that for years, but it’s one of those subjects you’ve got to be careful with. You don’t want to be corny or preachy. I guess I was afraid. Fear stops you from jumping into the unknown. I finally did it with "Riddles" and "Change the World."

Weekend: One thing we know about you is, since day one, you’ve been passionate about paving the way for other female rockers to succeed …
Jett:
I am. You know, it’s reflected when … girls come up to me and say how much it means, or musicians that come up to me and say to me I’m the reason they’re doing what they’re doing. It’s just very humbling is what it is – so far beyond you, beyond "JOAN JETT."
