Rock 'n Roll way of life for Laguna
from: zwire.com
by Tiffany Razzano
Carianne Laguna, daughter of rock veteran KENNY LAGUNA, who got his start in the music business long before he took on the role of punk icon JOAN JETT's manager and songwriting partner, was "initiated at birth" into the world of rock 'n' roll.
However, the 1997 South Side High School graduate was always more into folk rock than the punk rock that is her father's business. Still, she does find some common themes between the two genres.
"I think there there's something kind of the same with singer-songwriters and punk," she said. "The rawness they both have and that real independent spirit which I'm drawn to."
Despite graduating from the University of Colorado with a degree in fine arts, Carianne had an inkling she would eventually work in the music business like her father.
"It's always been my passion," she said. "When I was growing up I was drawn to [it] - something that [is]n't second nature to [me,] and I liked different music than what my family worked on. I was passionate [about music], but never to play it. I just always loved music, and on some level knew at some point in my life I would work with music."
She added, "But life is long. You never know what you're going to get into."
Today, Carianne works at BLACKHEART RECORDS, the label started by Jett and her father in 1980 when Jett's debut solo album was turned down by 23 major labels. For the past three years she's taken over the role her mother Meryl used to play. She handles all of the creative work, including album covers and packaging, videos, advertising, online marketing and any creative work needed for tours.
"It's an exciting time for the label," she said. "I'm focusing on that right now and seeing where it can go and where it takes me."
The label recently released the debut album, A Beat Missing or a Silence Added, by the Vacancies, which was produced by Kenny and Jett. They've also added The Eyeliners to their roster.
Carianne said that Jett is involved with every aspect of the label. "Joan is so into the music, and not just her own, so it's really great," she said. "She produced the Vacancies and she threw herself into it 200 percent. It's great to work with people who are so passionate."
She also said that she's lucky to have such a close and respectful relationship with her father. "It's interesting to work with my father," she said. "We get along amazingly and work together really well. Me, Joan and my father work together amazingly well and have great energy."
She added, "We're all in a really good place right now."
