Upcoming Waterfest concerts at Leach Amphitheater in August look good, especially America Aug. 24 and JOAN JETT Aug. 31.
David Clayton Thomas of Blood Sweat & Tears fame is on tap Aug. 3, along with the Cryan Shames. I saw Thomas at Walleye Weekend a couple of years ago and he still had it, performing all his hits to perfection.
Aug. 10 features swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, who did a great set last year and are sure to deliver more of the same.
If you are interested in new upcoming acts then New Monsoon is for you Aug. 17. They received a Jammy award on MTV’s award show this year for best live tour and were nominated for best live CD. You can sample their new CD at www.newmonson.com (click on media link).
America’s 2002 appearance at Waterfest set an attendance record, and for good pop/rock tunes they are superb.
The must-see concert is JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS. Mike Dempsey, Waterfest organizer, says they are one of the best live bands he has seen. I got a chance to talk by phone to KENNY LAGUNA, keyboard player with the BLACKHEARTS and producer/writer with JOAN JETT.
Q: In a nutshell tell us about you and JOAN JETT.
Kenny: I got together with Joan right after her first band, the RUNAWAYS, broke up. I had played in a few bands, most notably Tommy James & the Shondells. We couldn’t get a record deal even though we were the hottest band on the East coast. We started our own label out of necessity, selling albums out of my big old Cadillac. Then in 1982 "I Love Rock and Roll" hit number one for 16 weeks. Joan knew it was a hit and I thought it might be, and the rest is history as they say.
Q: You are back at Waterfest this year, your thoughts?
Kenny: We played Milwaukee twice in the last two weeks and we always play more gigs in Wisconsin on every tour. The fans in Wisconsin are the best, very enthusiastic! We are glad to be coming back to Oshkosh for Waterfest.
Q: Tell us about the new CD "SINNER"
A: The first song, "Riddles," took us two years to write the lyrics and is the first political song we have done. When you write a song and the second verse says about the same as the first, you really don’t have anything to say, and we wanted to make a statement with this song. It is about the doublespeak that we are getting now from our political leaders, and for people to wake up to what they are doing to us. We covered Sweet’s "ACDC" and a Replacements tune and the rest originals we have been working on for some time with other people like Ted Templeton and others. The current issue of Rolling Stone gave it three stars and the fans like what they hear at the concerts, so we are hoping it will do well.
