It’s heady times for Warped minds

No, a bomb did not hit Fitchburg Municipal Airport Wednesday. The giant dust cloud rising over the airstrip came from the Vans Warped Tour, where 17,000 fans stomped and moshed their way through 100-degree heat in celebration of the daylong, 70-band punk extravaganza.
Heat exhaustion, dehydration and the usual bloody noses that come with standard Vans Warped Tour behavior made for a long day for concert organizers and EMT personnel.
The bands themselves seemed well aware of the dangerous conditions. James ‘‘Buddy" Nielsen of New Jersey’s Senses Fail told the crowd at the end of their set, ‘‘You guys stay safe out there. Don’t die."
Good advice. Despite the heat, fans still acted their part, crowd-surfing, moshing and screaming along to their heroes’ songs. While the occasional mohawked and severely tattooed fan was on hand, the majority of concertgoers consisted of suburban middle- and high-schoolers.
This year’s Vans Warped lineup provided a healthy mix of young upstarts and old-school punk veterans. Of the newer generation, Motion City Soundtrack stood out from the ‘‘oi" band pack, with stabbing new wave synths and a penchant for melodies over the usual tuneless screaming. Singer Justin Pierre also added his own public safety announcement, telling the crowd, ‘‘Hydration is sexy!"
Other high-profile young acts such as the pop-punk outfit Saves the Day generated enthusiastic responses with their infectious, if painfully earnest, emo-soaked tunes.
Some of the smaller stages revealed some as-of-yet undiscovered talent. The British punk trio Tat distinguished itself with a heady combination of hooks, style and sass. Charismatic frontwoman Tatiana DeMaria looks to be a star in the making.
Many of the older, more traditional acts gathered surprisingly large crowds considering the largely teenaged demographic. Punk graybeards such as the positive-vibed Bouncing Souls and political agitators NOFX gave rousing and well-attended sets.
The surprise of the evening was the turnout for JOAN JETT. A healthy throng of kids and older folks crowded in to hear a fantastic set from the ’80s icon that rendered labels such as screamo or post-hardcore meaningless. Jett and her band the BLACKHEARTS simply played rock ’n’ roll - and it was wonderful.
