Punk circus comes to town

There were no elephants or acrobats, but to 10,750 fans, Vans Warped Tour was like a circus — a punk rock circus.
Packs of people roamed the grounds of Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain on Friday for a day of music and mayhem.
"We never took our kids to the circus," said Mary Vanpatten, of Scotia, N.Y., "We took them to Warped Tour."
Her husband Duane has experienced the festival every year since it started 12 years ago. "It’s come a long way," Mr. Vanpatten said.
The atmosphere was more than loud music. An abundance of tents peddling band merchandise set up alongside activist groups PETA and Punk Voter, which offered voter registration forms.
Brendan Walter, 20, guitarist of Philadelphia-based Valenica stood among the throngs, asking passersby to come see his band.
"There’s a gazillion people here who all like music," he said. "I can just go around and get people semi-interested."
The sun beat down on sweaty fans as veteran punks The Casualties blew through a 30-minute set, demanding the audience form a circle pit.
A late-afternoon breeze blew through the grounds as pop-punkers Saves the Day drew a large crowd of bouncing heads and pumping fists.
The New Jersey band sprinkled songs from its latest release, "Sound the Alarm," in with favorites "At Your Funeral" and "Fireflies."
Stages away, mewithoutYou had a smaller crowd swaying as it churned through songs like "Four Word Letter, Part 2" and "My Exit, Unfair." The band, which fuels its bus with vegetable oil, was led by a graceful Aaron Weiss, who wished the crowd "peace for the rest of (their) lives" before exiting.
JOAN JETT’s raging guitar and raspy voice blasted the early evening audience through her latest, "SINNER," and her classic, "I Love Rock ’N’ Roll." Ms. Jett didn’t have to use typical crowd participation gimmicks to get her army of fans to sing; their volume exceeded hers.
"She looks about 25!" exclaimed Jim Cook, 42, of Shavertown, as he watched the bikini-clad rocker.
Main attractions Anti-Flag, NOFX and Thursday had the crowd’s full attention, as all three Warped veterans delivered energy-packed sets.
Thursday’s Andrew Everding says the band’s thrashing energy never falters.
"We try as hard we can to show people who we are on stage," the keyboardist said.
Before closing, members of the Bouncing Souls hailed the breezy day as "Best Weather at Warped Tour Day."
Alex Eggert, 20, of Mount Pocono, said he didn’t care about the weather. He just loved the "excellent collection of bands."
