Davison's Chiodos hit Warped main stage

DETROIT -A touring festival such as the Vans Warped Tour, now in its 12th year, is rarely without its headline-grabbing stories.
This year has had some juicy offerings, including JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS' return to the punk rock scene Jett helped pioneer in the '70s.
However, the story that seemed to steal headlines this year was the emergence of Davison's Chiodos as the tour's bona fide breakthrough act.
Originally slated for only a small leg of the tour on the smaller SmartPunk Stage, Chiodos became a consistent draw in other markets and found itself added to other Warped dates beyond the initial schedule.
In addition, Saturday's show at Comerica Park saw the band get promoted from sideshow to main attraction, rewarded with a coveted mid-day, main stage slot - followed by a rare acoustic set on their native SmartPunk Stage.
"It's weird because of the fact that we had never played a Michigan Warped Tour before," said Chiodos bassist Matt Goddard prior to his band's set.
"The fact that the first time we get to play it, it is on the Main Stage, is awesome."
Chiodos took the stage for their mid-afternoon set amidst a Main Stage-worthy crowd and delivered a set that seemed fueled almost entirely by the fans' relentless energy. The band stuck to material from its 2005 album, "All's Well That Ends Well," which already has SoundScanned more than 61,000 copies, an impressive number for a band on an independent label.
Chiodos was not the only Flint-area band on this year's bill. Fenton's Apathy For An Enemy and Radio Pirate DJ were both part of the lineup on the Local Bands Stage.
Also, Flushing-based all-girl ensemble Handcuffs & Heels made another worthy appearance at the Shira Girl Stage, which features female-fronted rock acts.
Elsewhere, emo-punkers Saves the Day delivered a peppy set featuring material from their recent "Sound the Alarm" album and followed it with a riveting acoustic set. Spacey rockers Valient Thorr waxed political before vocalist Valient Himself dove off the public address system speakers toward the fans below in a death-defying jump.
HelloGoodbye featured a peppy, indie-pop format that appeared to pay homage to the geek-fronted kitsch of early Weezer. Helmet also successfully revitalized their long-dormant alternative rock sound to a new generation of fans.
JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS closed the evening, opening with the classic rocker "Bad Reputation." Jett's vocals retained the same edginess that made her a breakout star decades ago, and her stage performance was charismatic and energetic.
Even her new material, such as the current single, "Backlash," had an authentic vintage quality that stood nicely alongside her numerous classic songs.
Jett toned things down a bit with her famed cover of Tommy James' "Crimson and Clover." However, the show-stealer was her hit-making, punky gem "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," which effectively silenced any doubters who wondered if Jett was still capable of producing an intense rock show.
Much like JOAN JETT, the Vans Warped Tour hides its age well, and offers no hints of slowing down in the near future. This year's tour was a perfect blend of the young and old, keeping up the tradition it set 12 years ago.
