Jett teaches tour a few things

Click to enlarge The younger fans attending this year's Vans Warped Tour might be excused for thinking the band rocking the main stage accidentally took a wrong turn after shuffling out of the Reverse Day Care tent on their way to get another pair of earplugs.

But once they hear the first chunky notes blasting out of punk rock legend JOAN JETT's low slung guitar, and get a load of the 47-year-old's age-defying washboard abs poking out of her omnipresent skintight leather pants, they'll realize they're the ones who are going to need the earplugs.

Never one to follow trends or adhere to music business rules, three decades into her career as a headliner, Jett has hopped aboard the Warped wagon to teach the kids at the long-running punk rock and extreme sports festival a little something about longevity. She tops a bill that features dozens of acts who weren't even born when she began her career in the mid 1970s as part of the seminal all-girl punk band the RUNAWAYS.

And, the 12th annual tour keeps with the administration-bashing tone of "Riddles," ("need a new direction / cuz this one we can't afford") the first song on Jett's new album, "SINNER." The festival features a raft of politically minded acts such as Anti Flag, Against Me, NOFX and Rise Against, alongside goth punks (AFI), ska-tinged bands (Bouncing Souls) and plenty of emo (Motion City Soundtrack, Saves the Day and Thursday).

Jett's not alone when it comes to old-schoolers, either, as first wave British punks the Buzzcocks are performing on some dates, as are the reunited Germs, whose 1979 debut was produced by Jett. As usual, the tour is the cheap date of the summer, with tickets maxing out at $32.25, though Jett said the bargain is being turned on to so many new bands.

"The whole festival atmosphere is a whole different experience from doing your own tour," the raspy voiced singer said recently after spending her first few weeks on the road with Warped. "I thought before that it would be big traveling punk rock 'n' roll circus, and that's what it is. But it's even better than I expected."

Jett was invited on the tour by founder Kevin Lyman, who wanted her to play as a way to show some of the bands and fans a bit about punk rock history and the early influence of women courtesy of her stint in the riot grrrl godmothers, the RUNAWAYS.

Question: What's it been like hanging out with all these younger bands?
Answer:
We've had fun talking about music. I'm a fan of theirs, too. It's a reciprocal thing. We talk about music and history, and people ask me about the things I've done.

Q. Had you ever attended Warped before?
A:
No, so it's all new to me.

Q: What female rockers today do you see taking up your mantle?
A:
It's hard to say. I'm not exposed enough to it to say, but there's a girls stage on Warped called the Shira Girl Stage and there's a lot of girl-fronted bands there, which is cool. There's a band called the Eyeliners on our label (BLACKHEART RECORDS) who are good and I saw a band called Girl in a Coma out of Texas who were good.

Q: How did you end up with Cincinnati native Carmen Electra playing your love interest in the video for the single "ACDC," about a kind of unconventional three-way love triangle?
A:
We were bold enough to ask her. We played an event in the same general area on the same day, and I had heard she was a really big fan, and were able to say hello. That coincided with the writing of the treatment for the video, and she's so down to earth and unaffected that we thought she'd be the perfect.

Q: How old is too old to wear skintight leather pants?
A:
[Laughs] Well, you know, I've seen eloquent older women wearing leather pants. I could get up there at 80 ... I don't know. I guess when you feel too old, you're too old.
