There was a voicemail on my phone this morning from my dad giving detailed instructions on how to complete my loan consolidation forms. His voice sounds so far away and being out here on the road the last thing I'm thinking about is consolidating loans. I forget that this coming September I will stand in front of a classroom as a teacher and no longer the pit reporter that finds nothing wrong with wearing the same pair of dirty jeans and foul chucks every day. But there's still a lot of this tour left and I'm putting off any idea of growing up as much as i can.
That's the beauty of this tour-there's a dimension of it that never has to grow up. Thousands of people return to it year after year despite who is playing; just because of what it is. The bands that have exploded on the tour might turn out to be huge or by next year we won't remember their names. I bet most people don't know that No Doubt, Black Eyed Peas, and Eminem have all played Warped Tour since it's birth. Raleigh's Hot Topic guest pit reporter, Robin, turned forty one today and I'm pretty sure at her age she's way cooler then I'll ever be.
Yesterday in Charleston I noted a man that had to be in his 60's, perhaps older, who was wearing no shirt and Hawaiin board shorts with the biggest smile i've ever seen on his face. He was singing along and rocking back and forth.
I watched him for quite some time, and I had no desire to talk to him. I didn't want to know his name or age or what he did. I was just content in watching him enjoy the music and in turn I found joy in it. Dianne, my superfan mom the other day brought up the same point. It's a wonderful thing to be able to receive satisfaction through someone else's pure enjoyment. Working on this tour and looking at it from the inside you sometimes forget what it's like to be seeing these bands for the first time.

I'm not the same person as I was when I went to my first Warped Tour and watched Bad Religion play. I can't stay fourteen years old and continue to have the same enthusiasm as I did when I first discovered this entire world. Thank God I'm not fourteen years old anymore. But the idea that I can still listen to the same song and it will take me back to a specific time and place, I'm pretty sure that's the reason we see people returning to the tour year after year.
Sometime's i'm at a loss for words when I sit down to write this blog and I wonder what the heck my job is really supposed to be accomplishing. And then I remember that it's really the coolest thing in the world, to be able to see how exciting it is for a girl who's at her very first Warped Tour. Maybe it's the expression on her face when she's able to meet Sonny From First to Last. Maybe she has no clue who Wes Borland is because when Nookie came out she was totally unaware of the radio. Whatever, none of that really matters. It could be part of the reason I struggle to write these blogs so much because the tour is just so diverse and has grown into something monstrous.
It's raining again today in Raleigh. Does it matter? No. The people on the tour may be getting weary of the weather but does it matter so much to the fans? The look on the crowd's face when JOAN JETT closes with "I Love Rock and Roll." is pure magic. Once they recognize the opening notes of the song their faces light up as if they're surprised that she would play it. The crowd raises their arms in the air and there are several different generations watching her for the first time. JOAN JETT finishes her last song and then urges the crowd to go to the opposite main stage to watch AFI. It's the first time AFI has played on the tour, despite a lot of confusion that they were already here. The wait was well worth it as it seemed that everyone in Raleigh was there to see Davey and Co. take the stage. I'm personally a fan of the newer short bob Davey's rocking these days. The singer from Aiden was watching from the wings I'm sure taking notes for his own performance. I think I need to start wearing earplugs because my ears are starting to feel the ravage of standing next to speakers every day. I always swore I'd never be that person wearing earplugs at a show but I think tomorrow I'll proudly wear them. Also, a lot of you have been asking what times bands are playing and how you can figure out what stages they'll be on. Every day it changes, but I did post a photo of what you need to look for when you walk in. It's got all of the information for the day, and even the bands are finding out what time they play the morning of the show. I repeat, the photo I am posting is probably not the way the lineup will look when it comes to your town. Thank you!
