Satan is real for music biz on Tuesday

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - The music industry has an unprecedented opportunity on Tuesday to have some fun with its reputation -- deserved or otherwise -- as the devilish corrupter of innocent youth.
For June 6 will be the first album release date in history that correlates numerically with the Mark of the Beast: 666. (Cue: Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast.")
While Fox's remake of "The Omen" is hitting movie theaters that day, the music industry is playing it safe. No mainstream superstars are releasing albums that day. The biggest names are California modern rock band AFI, electronica duo Zero 7, veteran rocker JOAN JETT, the old-school combo Elvis Costello/Allen Toussaint, rapper Yung Joc and British pop singer Katie Melua.
Death metal band Cradle of Filth intended to put out its new record June 6, but, according to a representative at its Roadrunner Records label, "The production of the album came to a screeching halt because Dani Filth had throat problems."
It may be a sign of the apocalypse that "Karaoke to the Music of Johnny Cash: I Wanna Be Like Cash" is out June 6. Imagine thousands of drunks warbling "A Boy Named Sue" as they wobble in karaoke bars across the country at the same time.
Internet webcaster Radio Free Satan is, understandably, very excited about the day, which must be like Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and the Super Bowl all rolled into one. RFS is throwing "Satan's Rockin' 666 Eve" June 5 in Los Angeles, a concert featuring Krell and Living Deadgirls of Headsick Pinups, among others. Attendees can win free T-shirts and porn. The next day, RFS will release its sixth-anniversary compilation album. (Does Dick Clark know that RFS' Web site features his likeness with devil's horns and 666 on his forehead?)
Terrestrial radio stations do not have to dig very deep to come up with some appropriate material. A sample: INXS' "The Devil Inside," Mitch Ryder's "Devil in a Blue Dress," Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," Cliff Richard's "Devil Woman," Beck's "Devil's Haircut," Elvis Presley's "You're the Devil in Disguise," Van Halen's "Runnin' With the Devil," the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," and anything by Robert Johnson.
