You already know that JOAN JETT loves rock ’n’ roll, doesn’t give a damn about a bad reputation and hates herself for loving you. But there are still a few things she’s kept private until now. On the eve of headlining this year’s Warped Tour, the sneering Queen of Noise confesses to Harp about Sid Vicious’ belt, Central American presidents, Mike Tyson and more.

1. JOAN JETT reads advanced philosophy books at a rate of one a week—not bad a for a high-school dropout!

2. Jett was the first major artist from an English speaking country to perform in Panama. While there, she did a live Panamanian TV talk show and thousands of Panamanians gathered outside the TV studio. When she tried to leave, a major riot ensued. Then-president Noriega called out the National Guard to rescue Jett from the crowd. Later, he sent the presidential plane to pick her up and take her to his presidential palace. Jett was not eager to spend a night alone with El Presidente, so the U.S. military was called in and covertly flew her out of the country.

3. Jett gave Sid Vicious the black leather "ring" belt that the Sex Pistol was often photographed wearing. Jett bought the belt at the Pleasure Chest in Hollywood.

4. The JOAN JETT/Police concert at Shea Stadium is one of the venue’s Top 5 most attended shows of all time, right above the Rolling Stones and below the Who, Simon and Garfunkel and the Beatles.

5. Jett was Howard Dean's first celebrity supporter and stood onstage with him while he gave his notorious "I have a scream" speech in Iowa.

6. She has been in more active war zones than anyone else, including senators, congressmen, etc. She was the first to entertain the troops in the Kosovo war, and the first noncombatant to sleep in the war zone in the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, where she went deep "downrange" with nothing but a guitar and a battery powered-amp.

7. Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and Van Halen all opened for Jett’s band the RUNAWAYS at L.A.’s infamous Whisky a Go Go.

8. Jett sang the national anthem for her friend Cal Ripken when he tied and broke Lou Gehrig's "unbreakable" record for consecutive baseball games played on September 6, 1995. She sat with baseball legends Willie Mays, Joe DeMaggio and Frank Robinson, as well as President Clinton and VP Al Gore.

9. Fight-day wake-up calls were routine for JOAN JETT and former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson from the sixth fight in his career up until he enlisted Don King as his manager. The first fight day that Jett did not call Tyson was the boxer’s infamous Buster Douglas matchup—Tyson’s first career loss.

10. On a trip to entertain troops in the Middle East, JOAN JETT requested a trip to Jerusalem. Upon visiting one of that country’s sacred shrines, the Wailing Wall, she accepted a yarmulka from one of the guards and pranced over to the men’s side of the Wall to make a prayer. An Israeli colonel appeared. He screamed, "International Incident! International Incident!" at Jett’s manager who quickly whisked her to safety. The Israeli detail assigned to the trip agreed never to speak of this to anyone and swore Jett was the only woman ever to stick a prayer paper into the men’s side of the Wailing Wall since Israel first became a nation!
