Fitchburg officials give Warped Tour’s visit OK

FITCHBURG— The Vans Warped Tour, which features dozens of punk and alternative-rock acts, has a history of tying up traffic for more than eight hours.
But local officials, looking ahead to the tour’s appearance in Fitchburg this summer, are not concerned. They say traffic woes resulting from previous tour stops in Brockton, Northampton and Foxboro were specific to those areas’ highway patterns.
"We put a lot of consideration regarding all aspects of the event," said Deputy Fire Chief Michael Spano said. "It is a long elaborate planning process that involves Fitchburg, Lunenburg and Leominster."
The Vans Warped Tour is scheduled for Aug. 2 at the Fitchburg Airport.
It is the first time the tour will stop in Fitchburg. However, the city airport has hosted the annual Locobazooka festival, a major event that draws about 15,000 people, for the past three years.
Sgt. Glenn C. Fossa and Deputy Chief Spano visited with Northampton officials in an attempt to learn from their 2005 concert problems. Traffic that was jammed for miles along Interstate 91 as 20,000 fans brought three northbound exits to a close.
The traffic jam also caused some frustrated concertgoers to abandon their cars by the side of the interstate to walk to the fairgrounds.
Gates will open at 11 a.m. for the Warped Tour and bands will include NOFX, Rise Against, JOAN JETT and the Blackharts, Helmet, Thursday, Motion City Soundtrack and Saves the Day. Tickets are $20.49 and are on sale at Strawberries record stores and online at tickets.com.
