Warped, Ozzfest tours headed to Detroit

Warped on Woodward? No Ozzy on Ozzfest? Two major summer music festivals - Warped and Ozzfest - return to metro Detroit this year, one at a new location, the other without its familiar headliner.
The 2006 edition of the Vans Warped Tour will return to Detroit's Comerica Park parking lot on July 29. Dubbed "Warped on Woodward," a portion of Woodward Avenue near the stadium, Fox Theatre and State Theatre will be closed to accommodate its seven stages, dozens of bands and thousands of fans.
The move was prompted by the recent closing of the Pontiac Silverdome, where it was held from 2003-2005, according to Dave Clark of tour promoter Live Nation's Farmington Hills office.
The event last was staged in the Comerica lot in 2002, but tour organizers complained of inadequate space.
"It will be in a huge area with additional space," Clark said.
Headlining this year's punk, metal and underground rock tour are JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS. They'll be joined by Less Than Jake, Helmet, Underoath, Rise Against, Thursday, NOFX, AFI and Saves the Day.
Tickets will go on sale online at www.warpedtour.com at 6 p.m. Wednesday. No date for local ticket sales has been announced.
Meanwhile, Ozzfest founder Ozzy Osbourne will headline only 10 of this year's 20 shows. The July 19 stop at Clarkston's DTE Energy Music Theatre won't be one of them, Clark said.
Osbourne said in a Friday tour announcement he was cutting back "because after 10 years I feel it's time to let someone else share the headlining spotlight. We want to shake it up a bit this year."
A "major main stage" act will be named to replace him on May 23. It's speculated that Metallica, which will induct his band Black Sabbath into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, will be that replacement.
Also on the main stage: System of a Down, Disturbed, Hatebreed and Lacuna Coil. Second stage acts include Atreyu, Unearth, Norma jean and Between the Buried and Me.
Ticket prices and availability will be announced early next week, Clark said.
