Little Steven's Underground Garage Audience Surges By 25% To Over One Million In North America
Biggest National Audience Yet Adds To Banner Year For Rock and Roll Crusader
Little Steven's Underground Garage now reaches over one million listeners weekly in North America, according to the newest ratings released last week by Arbitron. The blockbuster syndicated radio show posted a dramatic gain in listenership, notching a 25% audience increase since last fall. This year, the show reached a milestone, airing in all top ten US markets and 19 of the top 20. It is the most successful syndicated music program on the air right now.
Among persons age 25-54, ratings increased in major markets New York City, San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia, Houston, Wash DC, Boston, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Baltimore, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Portland (OR), Cleveland, Milwaukee, Providence, Columbus, Orlando, Norfolk, Austin and Memphis, among others. The show has experienced similar gains among men age 25-54, with ratings up in 12 of the top 20 markets in which Little Steven's Underground Garage broadcasts.
This year Little Steven recruited friends and legends Ringo Starr, Iggy Pop, Brian Wilson, original Beatles drummer Pete Best and 'Batman' actor Adam West for revealing interviews and guest host positions, further distinguishing Little Steven's Underground Garage as a must listen for rock fans.
Created and hosted by Little Steven, the show has met with massive success since its debut on April 7, 2002. Little Steven's Underground Garage airs on 135 affiliates in 200 markets in North America, as well as affiliates in Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Rome in addition to 45 other countries around the world via the Voice of America Networks. Affiliates in Singapore and London will be added in the next few months. Rolling Stone has called the syndicated show "mind-blowingly great."
The newly-announced ratings provide another facet to what is already a banner year for rock and roll renaissance man Little Steven Van Zandt.
He narrates a new documentary on The Hives, included on the "Tussles in Brussels" DVD, which will be released November 14.
Little Steven has led the fight to save legendary club CBGBs, hosting rallies and benefit concerts and recruiting the Mayor and Governor on his righteous mission to keep the club open.
His liner notes accompany the four-disc box set 'Children Of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era - 1976-1995,' which was released August 30 by Rhino Records. This four-disc set celebrates the diverse range of post-punk underground music influenced by the garage rock and psychedelic anthems featured on the original 'Nuggets' collection.
In its second year, Little Steven extended his syndicated radio show and fulfilled the idea of a 24-hour rock and roll radio station with the launch of the Underground Garage channel 25 on SIRIUS Satellite Radio. In March, platinum rock artist JOAN JETT, Martin Lewis (infamous British Bon Vivant and Beatles expert), Mighty Manfred (of Atlanta's The Woggles), and Ko Melina (of Detroit's Ko & the Knockouts and The Dirtbombs) joined hosts and rock and roll luminaries Kid Leo, Andrew Loog Oldham (manager and producer of the first seven Rolling Stones albums), Kim Fowley, Bill Kelly and "Handsome" Dick Manitoba (of the legendary Dictators) for a full DJ line-up. The launch commemorated the exact 53rd anniversary of pioneering DJ Alan Freed's "Moondog Coronation Ball," widely considered the first rock and roll concert.
In 2005, Little Steven brainchild The Outlaw Country channel 36 on SIRIUS Satellite Radio got a bit rowdier with the addition of Shooter Jennings, Cowboy Jack Clement, Hillbilly Jim, and Dallas Wayne, to the already quirky cast of DJs including Mojo Nixon, DJ Rig Rocker, Meredith, and Chris T. In addition to playing all the rebels and renegade of country music the Outlaw Country channel broadcasted special programming and interviews with Hank Williams III, John Carter Cash, Wanda Jackson, Rosie Flores, Lou Whitney, Jay Farrar, Catlin Cary, Thad Cockrell, and many more.
Vinny "Big Pussy" Pastore and his posse of Joe "Joey Rags" Rigano, John "Cha-Cha" Ciarcia, "Uncle Floyd" Vivino and announcer "Brooklyn" Joe Causi continue to crack up audiences on the hysterical talk/comedy program The Wiseguy Show produced by Little Steven for SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Guests have included singers Paul Anka, and Nancy Sinatra, baseball legend Joe Pepitone, music industry mogul Sid Bernstein, Wink Martindale, "The View"'s Joy Behar, Louis Prima's daughter Lena Prima, Dr. Joyce Brothers and actors Sylvester Stallone, Esai Morales, Michael Nouri, Timothy Hutton, Doris Roberts, Frank Vincent, and Rosie Perez. The fab five took to the road for remote broadcasts (they call them Meatball Serenades) in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Long Island and all over the five boroughs.
Little Steven is a well-known musician and actor, performing as a founding member of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and as an original castmember on HBO's critically acclaimed dramatic series, The Sopranos, playing Silvio Dante. The Sopranos cast is halfway through filming their sixth season and the show has been renewed for a seventh season.
